Psychobiological markers of allostatic load in depressed and nondepressed mothers and their adolescent offspring

Benjamin W. Nelson et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal depression is associated with increased allostatic load in depressed women and their adolescent children, possibly increasing the risk for early onset of psychiatric conditions and disease in these offspring. The research also indicated differences in mental and physical health risk profiles between depressed mothers and their adolescent offspring, suggesting higher allostatic load in the affected individuals. Further investigation is needed to understand why certain biological systems are more impacted than others and to develop preventative programs for the adolescent offspring of depressed mothers.

Association of Inflammatory Activity With Larger Neural Responses to Threat and Reward Among Children Living in Poverty

Gregory E. Miller et al.

Summary: The study found that children living in poverty exhibit accentuated neural-immune signaling in response to stressors, supporting the neuroimmune network hypothesis. As socioeconomic conditions improve, these brain-immune associations become weaker.

Towards a new model and classification of mood disorders based on risk resilience, neuro-affective toxicity, staging, and phenome features using the nomothetic network psychiatry approach

Michael Maes et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning techniques to construct a model incorporating risk/resilience, adverse outcome pathways, staging, and phenome of mood disorders. By analyzing factors influencing these features, two distinct patient clusters were identified, and a transdiagnostic model of mood disorders was successfully created.

Patterns of poverty across adolescence predict salivary cortisol stress responses in Mexican-origin youths

Lisa E. Johnson et al.

Summary: Chronic poverty and income changes during adolescence were found to be associated with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity at age 17. Adolescents who began adolescence in deep poverty and remained in poverty at age 16 despite some income gains demonstrated distinct HPA suppression. Conversely, adolescents from more economically secure families showed typical cortisol increases following a lab stressor.

Measuring salivary markers of inflammation in health research: A review of methodological considerations and best practices

Yvette Z. Szabo et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in using saliva to measure inflammatory biomarkers due to its non-invasive nature, lower biosafety classification, and fewer specialized personnel required for collection compared to blood. Critical considerations for designing studies assessing salivary measures of inflammation include saliva collection procedures, sample storage and processing, assay techniques, flow rate, correspondence with blood-based markers, and potential demographic and health moderators. Further research is needed to establish gold standards for study design, measurement, and analysis, but salivary markers of inflammation hold promise as a useful tool for understanding oral and peripheral inflammation dynamics.
