Evaluation of an online text simplification editor using manual and automated metrics for perceived and actual text difficulty

Gondy Leroy et al.

Summary: Simplifying healthcare text is challenging, but crucial for improving health literacy. Few tools have been objectively shown to improve text complexity and understanding. In this study, we developed an online editor that integrates simplification algorithms to suggest concrete ways to simplify text. The results showed that perceived difficulty improved and there was an increase in correct responses to multiple-choice questions when the text was simplified.
