Treatment Trends and Combined Methods in Removing Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products from Wastewater-A Review

Paripurnanda Loganathan et al.

Summary: When released into wastewater, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) transform into microorganic contaminants, which are a major group of emerging pollutants. Exposures of humans, animals, and aquatic organisms to PPCPs have been linked to various risks such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity. Therefore, different methods are being implemented to remove PPCPs from water bodies. This report critically reviews these methods and proposes improvements for removal strategies.

Biodegradation of ceftriaxone in soil using dioxygenase-producing genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida

Gashtasb Mardani et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradability of the antibiotic Ceftriaxone was investigated using genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida. The results showed that the engineered Pseudomonas putida was able to significantly degrade Ceftriaxone, with a degradation rate of 69.53%. Kinetic modeling indicated that the rate of removal by the engineered Pseudomonas putida followed the zero-order reaction model. These findings suggest that Pseudomonas putida, which produces Catechol 2,3-dioxygenase, has potential practical applications in the biological treatment of cephalosporins in the environment.

Summary: This study investigates the toxic effect of TCE in sub-surface soil at different depths and identifies the microbial community and functional characteristics that play a role in the biodegradation process of TCE in soil. The understanding of soil microbiota associated with depth and TCE contamination levels, as well as their preferred C-sources, can facilitate effective biostimulation for efficient TCE degradation via external nutrient amendment.

Metabolic Profile of the Soil Microbial Community Exposed to Arsenite and Arsenate: a 1-Year Experiment

Rodrigo de Lima Brum et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the microbial metabolic profile in soil samples containing different forms of inorganic arsenic (As) and found that the microbial community's metabolic activity decreased in short-term exposure to arsenate, while in long-term exposure to arsenite, the microbial community's consumption of nitrogen-rich substrates decreased.

Impact of eight widely consumed antibiotics on the growth and physiological profile of natural soil microbial communities

Maria Rosa Pino-Otin et al.

Summary: The occurrence of antibiotics in soil ecosystems has a significant impact on the structure and functionality of soil microbial communities, particularly due to their combination with manure and biosolids. This study evaluated the effects of eight commonly used antibiotics on a natural soil microbial community using gene sequencing and physiological profiling. The results showed that these antibiotics significantly decreased the growth of soil microbial communities and adversely affected their physiological profiles. Each antibiotic was influenced by different physico-chemical parameters, even within the same family. Significant effects were observed at concentrations found in digested sludge, biosolids, and fertilized soils, indicating the potential cumulative and long-term effects of these antibiotics on the soil environment.

Evaluating the interaction of soil microorganisms and gut of soil fauna on the fate and spread of antibiotic resistance genes in digested sludge-amended soil ecosystem

Zheng-Hao Li et al.

Summary: Earthworms have been effective in reducing antibiotic resistance genes in solid waste, with temporary increases in soil ARGs after sludge amendment but eventual return to original levels. Earthworm gut digestion contributes to further reduction of ARG abundances by shifting the microbial community, although amended soil can increase ARG abundance in earthworm guts, potentially enhancing the risk of ARG spread through the food chain.

Deciphering Potential Roles of Earthworms in Mitigation of Antibiotic Resistance in the Soils from Diverse Ecosystems

Dong Zhu et al.

Summary: By studying the relationship between earthworm gut microbiome and soil microbiome, it was found that there are significant differences in bacterial community structure between the earthworm gut and soil, with lower abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in the earthworm gut compared to the surrounding soil. This suggests that earthworm-based bioremediation may be a potential method to reduce risks associated with the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in soils.

Ecotoxicity of triclosan in soil: an approach using different species

Paula Florencio Ramires et al.

Summary: Triclosan, widely used in personal care products, was found to have negative impacts on seedling growth, germination, root growth, and mortality of edaphic animals in this study. Even at low concentrations, Triclosan's ecotoxicological effects were observed in a multispecies system, highlighting its potential to compromise ecosystem services.

Toxic effects of norfloxacin in soil on fed and unfed Folsomia candida (Isotomidae: Collembola) and on gut and soil microbiota

Simin Li et al.

Summary: Soils contaminated with antibiotics can have adverse effects on soil-dwelling animals, as shown in a systematic ecological toxicity assessment of norfloxacin on the soil collembolan Folsomia candida. While norfloxacin had minimal impact on population and individual levels, antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly affected with longer exposure times or higher concentrations. Changes in gut microbiota diversity and composition were limited, but the presence of norfloxacin led to a decrease in operational taxonomic units in the gut and a reduction in the relative abundance of the predominant bacterial genus Wolbachia. Wolbachia may serve as a potential bioindicator for assessing norfloxacin pollution in soils at environmental concentrations.

Effect of earthworms in reduction and fate of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) during clinical laboratory wastewater treatment by vermifiltration

Sudipti Arora et al.

Summary: The study highlights the efficacy of vermifiltration technology in reducing antibiotic resistant bacteria and pathogens in clinical laboratory wastewater treatment. Earthworms and VF-associated microbial communities play a significant role in the removal of BOD, COD, coliforms, pathogens, and in shifting resistance patterns. Molecular profiling confirmed the mechanisms behind resistance patterns, with biofilm formation aiding in pathogen removal and resulting in a change in resistance profiles.

Antibiotics: An overview on the environmental occurrence, toxicity, degradation, and removal methods

Qiulian Yang et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the presence of antibiotics in the environment, their toxicity to non-target organisms, and current treatment technologies. Studies have shown that antibiotics are most frequently detected in wastewater, exhibiting toxicity to aquatic organisms. Fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are the most common antibiotics in the environment and can be removed through biotic or abiotic processes.
