Analyzing the competitiveness of low-carbon drive-technologies in road-freight: A total cost of ownership analysis in Europe

Bessie Noll et al.

Summary: This paper examines the cost competitiveness between commercial vehicles of varying alternative drive-technologies to support policy-makers in accelerating the zero-carbon road-freight transition. The results indicate that low- or zero-emission niche technologies already exhibit cost competitiveness in certain application segments and countries. Three TCO parameters - tolls, fuel costs, and CAPEX subsidies - are key drivers of this competitiveness.

Cost-effective technology choice in a decarbonized and diversified long-haul truck transportation sector: A U.S. case study

Lukas Mauler et al.

Summary: Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 requires accelerated efforts in decarbonizing long-haul truck transportation. Battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks can serve as emission-free alternatives to diesel-powered trucks. This study finds that, under current conditions, battery electric trucks outperform hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks in various long-haul use cases, but autonomous driving may change the competitive landscape in favor of hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks.
