The operation of the social support sector serving siblings of people with disabilities: A cross-country analysis

Ariella Meltzer

Summary: This paper presents an exploratory study on the business operation of sibling support in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, USA, and Canada. The findings reveal that sibling support mainly operates within the not-for-profit/charity sector with minimal funding and staffing, driven by the passion and personal experience of those who run the organizations. The paper discusses the implications of the findings in seeking recognition and legitimacy for sibling support as a distinct social service type within the disability/health/social care and not-for-profit/charity spaces.

Parenting a Child with a Neurodevelopmental Disorder

Peter L. Rosenbaum et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, there has been a significant shift in the conceptualization of childhood disability towards a focus on the family as the unit of interest. The F-words for Child Development framework has become influential in shaping modern approaches to intervention, emphasizing function, family, fun, friendships, fitness, and future. This shift has had a positive impact on both parents and professionals, with global adoption of these concepts leading to changes in the structure and content of services for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families.
