Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Antibacterial prescription and the associated factors among outpatients diagnosed with respiratory tract infections in Mbarara Municipality, Uganda

Timothy Eria Muwanguzi et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high antibacterial prescribing rate among RTI outpatients in Mbarara municipality, Uganda, especially in patients with URTIs, polypharmacy, and non-adherence to essential medicine list and generic name prescribing. This prescribing pattern does not comply with rational drug use policy and requires interventions such as antimicrobial stewardship, prescriber education on rational drug use, and further research to assess the appropriateness of antibacterial prescriptions.

Comparative assessment of the prevalence, practices and factors associated with self-medication with antibiotics in Africa

Eugene Vernyuy Yeika et al.

Summary: The prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) in Africa is high and varies across sub-regions, with Western Africa reporting the highest prevalence. Common sources of antibiotics used for SMA include community pharmacies, family/friends, and leftover antibiotics. The most frequently reported factor associated with SMA is low educational status.

Addressing antimicrobial resistance by improving access and quality of care-A review of the literature from East Africa

Kathrin Loosli et al.

Summary: Universal access to healthcare, including quality medicines, is considered a fundamental human right, but is still inaccessible to many in low- and middle-income countries. An existing framework captures variability in access to healthcare in low-resource settings through the dimensions of availability, accessibility, affordability, adequacy, and acceptability. The effectiveness of accessed healthcare is measured by the likelihood of a positive outcome, with proposed expansion to include an extra dimension of quality to improve health outcomes.

A systematic review of qualitative literature on antimicrobial stewardship in Sub-Saharan Africa

George James Porter et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a major problem in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with factors such as ineffective regulation, health system issues, lack of resources, and patient behaviors directly impacting antimicrobial stewardship. Policymakers need to consider various contextual factors when planning interventions to address this multi-faceted issue.

Neusa F. Torres et al.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of NPA utilization in LMICs, with women and participants aged 18 to 40 using them twice as much as men and other age groups. The review suggests conducting broader qualitative and comprehensive research to better understand the nuances of NPA use.
