WC-Co/316L stainless steel joining by laser powder bed fusion for multi-material cutting tools manufacturing

B. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: A novel approach using laser powder bed fusion technology was proposed to additively manufacture 316L stainless steel on a WC-Co substrate, obtaining complex multi-material cutting tools. Results showed a good bonding between materials with a dense and well-defined interface capable of withstanding cutting forces. The hardness of the stainless steel was found to be directly correlated with the energy density used during laser powder bed fusion. This method proved effective in producing multi-material WC-Co/316L stainless steel cutting tools with good metallurgical bonding and mechanical strength, without the need for an interfacial material.

Understanding drop spreading behaviour on WC-10wt%Co cutting tools-an experimental and numerical study

B. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: The spreading behavior of machining cutting fluid and water on WC-Co cutting tools was studied, with experimental measurement of contact angles and numerical simulations. It was found that machining cutting fluid has a shorter spreading time and larger drop radius compared to water. This study contributes to the understanding of drop spreading behavior on WC-Co cutting tools and provides important numerical models for predicting and improving the lubrication and heat removal capacity of cutting tools.

Cutting temperature measurement and prediction in machining processes: comprehensive review and future perspectives

Bruno Miguel Pereira Guimaraes et al.

Summary: During machining processes, the generated heat due to plastic deformation in a small area of the cutting tool plays a significant role in determining chip formation mechanisms, tool wear, tool life, and workpiece surface integrity and quality. This paper provides a comprehensive review of various methods for measuring and predicting temperatures in machining processes, evaluating their merits and demerits. The choice of the most suitable method depends on factors such as cost, size, shape, accuracy, response time, and temperature range. Additionally, this paper outlines future prospects for real-time cutting temperature monitoring in the context of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, and introduces the concept of smart cutting tools capable of measuring and controlling cutting temperature.

Influence of Micro-Textures on Cutting Insert Heat Dissipation

Jose Rosas et al.

Summary: Metal machining is a critical manufacturing process that has undergone continuous development to improve tool performance and reduce cutting forces, friction, and heat generation. Cooling systems and surface texturing have emerged as effective solutions to remove excessive heat and enhance tool performance. However, there is a lack of scientific data on how surface texturing reduces tool temperature and its underlying mechanisms. This study proposes an experimental setup to investigate the impact of tool surface characteristics on heat transfer. The results show that introducing groove patterns on the cutting inserts can significantly increase heat transfer rate through increased contact area, enhanced fluid turbulence, and improved surface wettability.

Modeling and prediction of cutting temperature in the machining of H13 hard steel of multi-layer coated cutting tools

Jingjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of multi-layer coatings on cutting temperature in dry turning of H13 hardened steel, proposing new analytical models to estimate coating temperature and coating-substrate interface temperature. It is found that the multi-layer coating can be equivalent to a mono-layer composite coating, accurately estimating cutting temperature through a heat transfer model.
