In-plane elastic properties of the Euplectella aspergillum inspired lattice structures: Analytic modelling, finite element modelling and experimental validation

Deepak Sharma et al.

Summary: This study develops new analytical models for 2D lattice structures inspired by two types of Euplectella aspergillum. The models for normal modulus and Poisson's ratio are derived using Castigliano's second theorem, considering plate-like elements as Euler beams subjected to stretching and bending deformations. Finite element modeling is used to simulate the in-plane elastic properties, and theoretical parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of design variables on the elastic constants. The developed analytical models are validated experimentally using lattice structures fabricated through the fused filament fabrication process. The results show good agreement with the finite element modeling and experimental data, suggesting the potential applications of these bio-inspired structures in energy absorption and lightweight structure designs.

Effect of truss core on sound radiation behavior of sandwich plate structures under structure borne excitation

Chengfei Li et al.

Summary: Compared to traditional honeycomb and stiffened sandwich structures, lattice-based structures offer higher stiffness and multifunctional capabilities, making them ideal substitutes for traditional core structures. This study investigates the sound radiation characteristics of sandwich plates with different truss cores under structure borne excitation. The theoretical model proposed in this study is validated through experimental results, and it is found that the sandwich plate with a 3D-Kagome core exhibits better sound radiation characteristics over a wide frequency range.

Study on Concave Direction Impact Performance of Similar Concave Hexagon Honeycomb Structure

Guanxiao Zhao et al.

Summary: Based on the traditional concave hexagonal honeycomb structure, three types of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures were compared. The relative densities of these structures were calculated using the geometric structure, and their impact critical velocities were determined using the 1-D impact theory. The in-plane impact characteristics and deformation modes of these structures at different velocities were analyzed using finite element software. The results showed changes in the stress platforms and the appearance of glue-linked structures with increasing velocity.

Bio-inspired hierarchical honeycomb metastructures with superior mechanical properties

Kanghui Song et al.

Summary: Inspired by natural hierarchical structures, this study proposes a new hierarchical honeycomb design methodology to overcome the shortcomings of conventional honeycomb structures. Through investigating the filling types, principles, and design basis of triangular, square, and circular holes at the microstructure level, a hierarchical honeycomb structure with superior mechanical properties is obtained. Simulation and experiment results show that the hierarchical honeycomb metastructures exhibit significantly improved overall mechanical properties compared with the conventional honeycomb structures, with the hierarchical honeycomb metastructures with circular holes having the best performance improvement.

Hongshun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural and mechanical properties of the glass sponge Euplectella aspergillum's skeletal lattice and its fluidic transport performance under different loading conditions. The results show that the double-diagonal reinforcements of the sponge lattice maximize torsional rigidity and allow control over the fluid opening position. Additionally, the ridge system in the lattice improves radial stiffness and fluid permeability.

Ferrimagnetic spin waves in honeycomb and triangular layers of Mn3Si2Te6

G. Sala et al.

Summary: A detailed analysis of the ferrimagnetic ground state of Mn3Si2Te6 using inelastic neutron scattering has been conducted in this study. The study reveals the existence of exchange anisotropy in Mn3Si2Te6, indicating a weak spin-orbit coupling in the material. The research employs a detailed simulation of the spin-wave spectrum and traditional refinement techniques, along with Monte Carlo simulations, to accurately determine the exchange couplings. The results are independently validated through a comparison with heat capacity measurements.

Mechanically robust lattices inspired by deep-sea glass sponges

Matheus C. Fernandes et al.

Summary: Computational analysis and mechanical testing have shown that the skeletal system of deep-sea hexactinellid sponges has achieved near-optimal resistance to buckling through evolution. The diagonal reinforcement strategy of the sponge achieves the highest buckling resistance for a given amount of material, and the sponge-inspired lattice geometry approaches the optimum material distribution for the design space considered. Lessons learned from studying sponge skeletal systems can be applied to geometrically optimize square lattice structures to avoid global structural buckling and improve material use in modern infrastructural applications.

Insights into the structure and morphogenesis of the giant basal spicule of the glass sponge Monorhaphis chuni

Andrzej Pisera et al.

Summary: Through detailed examinations using various microscopy techniques and analysis methods, we discovered inconsistencies in the structure of the Monorhaphis chuni basal spicules compared to earlier descriptions. This led to the identification of three different silica layers and the proposal of a new model for spicule formation. The unique structure and growth pattern of the Monorhaphis chuni basal spicules suggest that it cannot be generalized as a model for growth of all hexactinellid spicules.

Phalloidin Staining of Actin Filaments for Visualization of Muscle Fibers in Caenorhabditis elegans

Mario Romani et al.

Summary: The use of phalloidin-based dyes to stain actin filaments in C. elegans research is important, but existing protocols typically involve fixation steps with harmful compounds, preparation of specific buffers, and large numbers of worms. By implementing a safer and more flexible experimental procedure that bypasses fixation steps, uses conventional buffers, and requires a limited number of worms, a more efficient and faster method has been developed for staining actin filaments and visualizing muscle fibers in C. elegans.
