Fabrication of antibacterial Zr-BMG biomimetic surfaces by femtosecond laser

Cezhi Du et al.

Summary: Zirconium-based bulk metallic glasses (Zr-BMGs) with biomimetic structures were created using femtosecond laser, and their antifouling and antibacterial properties were evaluated. The results showed that the rice leaf-like and butterfly wing-like structures had the best antifouling effect, while the shark skin-like structure exhibited the highest bactericidal performance. Crystallization was observed on the surfaces with laser energy intensities greater than 2.38 J/mm2, but the substrate remained amorphous. The Nepenthes-like structure with disordered nano bulges showed the best balance between antifouling, bactericidal, and biocompatibility. These laser fabricated biomimetic structures can enhance the antibacterial activity of Zr-BMG medical devices, thereby improving medical treatment quality.
