Sustainability assessment of municipal solid waste separate collection and treatment systems in a large metropolitan area

Giovanni Gadaleta et al.

Summary: Using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis method, this study evaluated and compared the sustainability of different waste management schemes, finding that the door-to-door system is the best solution in environmental and socio-technical terms, despite its higher cost. Interestingly, there is limited deviation between the mixed collection mode and the door-to-door system, suggesting strong competitiveness of the former.

The role of (bio)degradability on the management of petrochemical and bio-based plastic waste

Sabino De Gisi et al.

Summary: This study aims to review the impact of plastic (bio)degradability on waste management systems, discussing the degradability of different types of plastics and strategies to improve it. However, these improvements are not always effective in the current waste management system, with incineration being the most feasible option. Therefore, further research in this area is needed.

The influence of bio-plastics for food packaging on combined anaerobic digestion and composting treatment of organic municipal waste

Giovanni Gadaleta et al.

Summary: The study assessed the influence of bio-based plastic films on anaerobic digestion and composting processes. It found that anaerobic digestion contributed to the disintegration of the bio-plastic material, while aerobic treatment was ineffective. The presence of cellulose acetate increased methane yield. The findings highlight the need to upgrade organic waste treatment plants and revise the requirements for compost use in agriculture.

Quality of recycling: Urgent and undefined

Davide Tonini et al.

Summary: Quality of recycling is a concept that lacks a clear definition and operational framework. This lack of clarity hinders the development of effective recycling and circular economy policies. This article reviews existing studies, synthesizes different approaches, and suggests a way forward for research to support circular economy policy measures and monitoring. The definition of recycling quality should consider the technical characteristics of the recyclate and its suitability for different end applications. Preserving functionality through functional recycling is crucial for resource substitution in the circular economy.

Effects of cellulose-based bio-plastics on the aerobic biological stabilization treatment of mixed municipal solid waste: A lab-scale assessment

Giovanni Gadaleta et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of cellulose-based bio-plastics on the biological stabilization of mixed municipal solid waste. The results showed that the presence of cellulose-based bio-plastics did not significantly affect the temperature, oxygen consumption, and carbon dioxide production of the waste mixture. Additionally, the disintegration rate of the bio-plastics remained stable over time. These findings suggest that cellulose-based bio-plastics can be effectively managed for energy recovery purposes.

Carbon Footprint and Total Cost Evaluation of Different Bio-Plastics Waste Treatment Strategies

Giovanni Gadaleta et al.

Summary: To address the problem of fossil-based pollution, bio-plastics have been increasingly used in various applications. However, the current waste management system has weaknesses in dealing with bio-plastic waste (BPW), and there is a lack of quantitative data. This study combines environmental and economic assessments to determine the most sustainable and suitable treatment for BPW. The results show that the organic, plastic, and mixed waste treatment routes have different costs and carbon footprints. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of improving waste treatment processes to ensure the quality of the output.

The role of waste management in reducing bioplastics' leakage into the environment: A review

Mirko Cucina et al.

Summary: Bioplastics are increasingly being used as substitutes for petroleum-derived plastics due to their biodegradability, however, concerns arise over incomplete degradation and leakage into the environment during waste management processes. This paper reviews literature on the biodegradation of bioplastics in industrial and natural environments, and discusses the potential role of waste management processes in reducing bioplastics leakage.

Anaerobic co-digestion of bioplastics as a sustainable mode of waste management with improved energy production - A review

Amith Abraham et al.

Summary: The world of bioplastics has rapidly expanded, generating new waste streams that pose challenges to waste processing; anaerobic co-digestion is considered the best option for efficient bioplastic waste processing with reduced space requirements and environmental pollution; the higher C/N ratio of bioplastics presents a challenge to anaerobic digestion, but co-digestion with lower C/N ratio biowastes can improve biogas production.
