Insight into the Structure, Functions, and Dynamics of the Leptospira Outer Membrane Proteins with the Pathogenicity

Shen-Hsing Hsu et al.

Summary: Leptospirosis, caused by Leptospira, is a common infectious disease in tropical and subtropical countries. This review discusses the structure, functions, and dynamics of surface-exposed antigens and their roles in Leptospira pathogenicity. It also explores the important role of a specific protein family with Leucine-rich repeat (LRR) in Leptospira pathogenicity.

Comparative proteomic analysis of Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae human vaccine strain and epidemic isolate from China

Zhe Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the proteomic differences between the vaccine strain and circulating isolate of Leptospira interrogans serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae in China. Many proteins showed differential expression between the two strains, including immunogenic and virulence-related proteins. Differences in carbohydrate, amino acid, and energy metabolism and transport were also observed, indicating potential metabolic diversity and adaptation of the pathogens to different environments.

Challenges for the development of a universal vaccine against leptospirosis revealed by the evaluation of 22 vaccine candidates

Mara A. C. Maia et al.

Summary: Leptospirosis is a neglected disease that affects humans and animals. Current vaccines fail to induce cross-protective immune response. Researchers attempted to design a new vaccine by identifying conserved epitopes of leptospiral antigens, and tested it in a hamster model. The vaccine showed some protective effect, but the results were not reproducible in subsequent experiments. Further evaluation of alternative animal models is needed for leptospirosis vaccine research.

In silico molecular docking in DNA aptamer development

Tholasi Nadhan Navien et al.

Summary: Aptamers, generated by SELEX, are single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides with binding affinity and specificity against target molecules. DNA aptamers are more stable and commonly used in diagnostics. The use of in silico molecular docking approaches alongside in vitro SELEX procedures for DNA aptamer development is increasing, aiming to streamline the process.
