Behaviour of 27 selected emerging contaminants in vertical flow constructed wetlands as post-treatment for municipal wastewater

Silvia Venditti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of different substrates in removing emerging contaminants from wastewater using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs). The laboratory investigation showed that VFCWs could provide excellent effluent quality, with overall removal efficiencies exceeding 90% in most cases. Substrate type played a role in the removal of compounds with medium elimination. Under real conditions, VFCWs with 15% activated biochar mixed with sand were effective in removing 18 emerging contaminants and meeting national discharge standards for 4 selected compounds.

Combined process of chemically enhanced sedimentation and rapid filtration for urban wastewater treatment for potable reuse

Cleber Pinto da Silva et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to propose a new post-treatment method for effluents from Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) by using rapid filtration, aiming at producing water for potable reuse. The quality of the treated effluent was evaluated by physical chemical analysis, heavy metals, and persistent organic contaminants. The best conditions were found to be using 20 mg/L of ferric chloride and natural pH of the effluent, resulting in less reagent consumption. The treatment using rapid filtration with disinfection by chlorine reached the appropriate level for urban, environmental, industrial, and indirect potable water reuse.

The Potential of Constructed Wetland Systems and Photodegradation Processes for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants-A Review

Marta Sanchez et al.

Summary: The presence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in the environment is increasing and requires effective removal technologies. This study reviews the behavior of EOCs during municipal wastewater treatment, particularly in constructed wetlands (CWs). It also explores their behavior in anaerobic digesters (ADs) and advanced oxidation processes, focusing on TiO2-based photocatalysis as a promising post-treatment. The elimination mechanisms in AD and CW treatment systems mainly involve sorption and biodegradation, while some contaminants remain recalcitrant.

Treatment technologies for emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Prangya R. Rout et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) are unregulated anthropogenic chemicals that persist in the environment and are considered contaminants of emerging environmental concerns. Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

Conventional Anaerobic Reactors Applied to Denitrification: a Comparison Between Packed Bed and UASB Reactors Under Low COD Conditions

Natalia Cangussu Duarte et al.

Summary: Anaerobic reactors combined with aerobic reactors show significant removal of carbonaceous matter but do not reduce total nitrogen concentration. Recirculation of nitrified effluent to anaerobic reactors for nitrogen removal is effective, with packed bed reactors performing better in denitrification and removal of organic matter and suspended solids than UASB reactors. The COD/NO3--N ratio in the effluent recirculation should not be less than 6, and the N2O concentration in the biogas remains below the detection limit, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Organic matter limitation promotes partial denitrification and the emergence of anammox bacteria in the sludge.

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants

Omar Fawzi Suleiman Khasawneh et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the global occurrence and removal of 43 pharmaceutical compounds in municipal wastewater treatment plants from 2010 to 2020, assessing their daily mass load and emissions. Significant variation in pharmaceutical concentrations between regions is found, with higher influent concentrations in Asian regions. Environmental risk assessment shows that 12 monitored pharmaceuticals pose a high potential risk to aquatic ecosystems. Guidelines and regulations are discussed to mitigate pharmaceutical occurrence in the environment.

Summary: The presence of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment poses global concerns due to their harmful impacts on the biosphere. Efforts to remove these compounds from wastewater have become a significant focus in environmental management. Advanced biological systems coupled with physical and chemical processes are emerging as promising treatment options, especially in regions where concentrations of harmful compounds exceed safe levels.
