Safety and effectiveness of dabigatran in routine clinical practice: the RE-COVERY DVT/PE study

Samuel Z. Goldhaber et al.

Summary: RE-COVERY DVT/PE is an international observational study comparing the safety and effectiveness of dabigatran and vitamin K antagonists in patients with deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. The study found that dabigatran had lower rates of bleeding events compared to vitamin K antagonists, but similar rates of symptomatic venous thromboembolism or related mortality. The results of this observational study with 1-year follow-up were consistent with randomized clinical trials.

Protein expression profiling suggests relevance of noncanonical pathways in isolated pulmonary embolism

Vincent Ten Cate et al.

Summary: Patients with isolated pulmonary embolism (PE) have a distinct clinical profile from those with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)-associated PE, with more pulmonary conditions and atherosclerosis. The study identified shared molecular processes between PE phenotypes, as well as an isolated PE-specific protein signature, indicating possible involvement of noncanonical pathways in the acute pathophysiology of isolated PE.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with isolated pulmonary embolism

Yong Hoon Lee et al.

Summary: Approximately 32% of pulmonary embolism patients who underwent imaging tests for DVT presented with isolated pulmonary embolism. Isolated pulmonary embolism was positively associated with female sex, whereas it was negatively associated with cancer, leg pain or swelling, and central pulmonary embolism. The presence or absence of concomitant DVT did not influence the severity and short-term prognosis of pulmonary embolism.

Summary: This study presents a real-world scenario of VTE in a tertiary care hospital in India, including 330 patient admissions related to VTE. The study found that approximately 30% of VTE patients were younger than 40 years old, and only 24% had provoked VTE.

Endothelial dysfunction and immunothrombosis as key pathogenic mechanisms in COVID-19

Aldo Bonaventura et al.

Summary: The authors suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infection induces a prothrombotic state and dysregulated immunothrombosis, leading to severe manifestations of COVID-19. They also discuss potential antithrombotic and immunomodulating drugs for treating COVID-19 patients, aiming to reduce the acute and long-term consequences of the disease by targeting immunothrombosis.
