The Risk of Postoperative Complications After Major Elective Surgery in Active or Resolved COVID-19 in the United States

John Z. Deng et al.

Summary: Surgical timing relative to the development of Covid-19 is associated with the risks of postoperative complications. Patients who undergo major elective surgery within 0 to 4 weeks after Covid-19 infection have an increased risk of postoperative pneumonia, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, and sepsis. Surgery performed within 4 to 8 weeks after infection is still associated with an increased risk of postoperative pneumonia, but surgery 8 weeks after Covid-19 diagnosis is not associated with increased complications.

Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2: Genomics, transmissibility, and responses to current COVID-19 vaccines

Yusha Araf et al.

Summary: The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is a heavily mutated virus with a high risk of infection. Limited information is available regarding the genomics, transmissibility, and effectiveness of vaccines against this variant, emphasizing the need for further investigation.

Comparative analysis of the risks of hospitalisation and death associated with SARS-CoV-2 omicron (B.1.1.529) and delta (B.1.617.2) variants in England: a cohort study

Tommy Nyberg et al.

Summary: The Omicron variant shows lower severity compared to Delta, especially in terms of hospital admission and death, with significant variations by age. Unvaccinated cases experience a larger reduction in intrinsic severity, while vaccinated cases experience reduced vaccine effectiveness. Booster vaccination with mRNA vaccines provides over 70% protection against hospitalization and death in breakthrough Omicron infections.

Propensity score methods for observational studies with clustered data: A review

Ting-Hsuan Chang et al.

Summary: Propensity score methods are commonly used to estimate causal effects in observational studies, but their application in clustered data is relatively new. This article presents a framework for estimating causal effects using propensity scores when study units are nested within clusters and are nonrandomly assigned to treatment conditions.

Increased incidence of post-operative respiratory failure in patients with pre-operative SARS-CoV-2 infection

Michael E. Kiyatkin et al.

Summary: Pre-operative SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with increased risk of post-operative respiratory failure and 30-day mortality, even when adjusting for other factors. Delaying elective surgery in infected patients may be advisable.

Timing of surgery following SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international prospective cohort study

D. Nepogodiev et al.

Summary: The study suggests that surgery should be delayed for at least 7 weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection, with patients experiencing ongoing symptoms >= 7 weeks from diagnosis potentially benefitting from further delay.

Effect of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns on planned cancer surgery for 15 tumour types in 61 countries: an international, prospective, cohort study

James C. Glasbey et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown measures have led to a portion of cancer patients not being able to receive planned surgery. In regions with full lockdowns, one in seven patients did not undergo surgery and experienced longer waiting times. Although short-term oncological outcomes were not greatly affected, delayed surgeries might result in long-term reduction in survival.

Delay to elective colorectal cancer surgery and implications for survival: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Thomas M. Whittaker et al.

Summary: The delay in elective colorectal cancer surgery due to the Covid-19 pandemic may have a negative impact on overall survival and disease-free survival. It is suggested that elective surgery for CRC patients should not be postponed longer than 4 weeks for better outcomes. Further focused research is essential for prioritizing patient groups based on risk factors in future delays or pandemics.
