Eating disorders in young patients with neurofibromatosis type 1

Summary: This article describes the association between neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and feeding and eating disorders (FED) in five patients. The onset of eating disorder symptoms occurred during the developmental age and was characterized by food intake restriction and physical hyperactivity. Further research is needed to screen NF1 populations for the presence of FED.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and autism spectrum disorder: Clinical implications for assessment and management

Summary: The study found that avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is more prevalent among younger children and those with comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Younger age, comorbid ASD, and male sex significantly predicted the occurrence of ARFID. Diet range and male sex significantly predicted nutritional inadequacy.

ADHD co-morbidities: A review of implication of gene x environment effects with dopamine-related genes

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on gene x environment (GxE) interactions related to the dopamine system in ADHD and its comorbid conditions. Studies mainly focused on candidate genes, including DRD4, DAT1, and MAOA, suggesting that variable number tandem repeats in these genes may mediate GxE interactions in ADHD and specific comorbid disorders. However, evidence for other polymorphisms is contradictory and less convincing. Lack of longitudinal studies testing the interaction between well-defined environmental factors and polygenic risk scores of the dopamine system as a whole is particularly notable.

The importance of a complete diagnostic assessment and considering the overlap diagnosis of ADHD and Autism is highlighted.

The Role of the Noradrenergic System in Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review

Summary: Noradrenaline plays a role in modulating feeding behavior and satiety, with conflicting evidence in its relationship with Eating Disorders (EDs). Preclinical studies suggest involvement of noradrenergic pathways in binge-like behaviors, while genetic and clinical studies show inconsistent findings on the absolute alterations in plasma NE values in patients with EDs. Pharmacological studies support the efficacy of noradrenaline-modulating therapies in treating EDs, but further research is needed to understand the potential of the noradrenergic system as a target for treatments.

Autism spectrum disorder and anorexia nervosa: an Italian prospective study
