Advancing river corridor science beyond disciplinary boundaries with an inductive approach to catalyse hypothesis generation

Adam S. Ward et al.

Summary: A unified conceptual framework for river corridors requires synthesis of diverse site-, method- and discipline-specific findings. In this study, an inductive approach using machine learning was used to identify potential relationships in river corridor observations. The approach generated numerous previously uninvestigated relationships and highlighted novel research questions.

Riparian Land Cover, Water Temperature Variability, and Thermal Stress for Aquatic Species in Urban Streams

Anne Timm et al.

Summary: This study identified significant negative correlations between water temperature and percent tree canopy in the 5 m riparian area, and positive correlations between water temperature and total length of stormwater pipes. The mixed-effects models predicted that tree canopy cover in the riparian area would reduce water temperatures by 0.01 to 6°C, while the total length of stormwater pipes would increase water temperatures by 0.01 to 2.6°C.

Green roof vegetation management alters potential for water quality and temperature mitigation

Valerie Ouellet et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of green roofs under different management regimes on water quality and thermal dynamics. It finds that managed green roofs have better water quality characteristics, while unmanaged green roofs perform better in reducing thermal surges.
