Application of Wearable Sensors Technology for Lumbar Spine Kinematic Measurements during Daily Activities following Microdiscectomy Due to Severe Sciatica

Athanasios Triantafyllou et al.

Summary: The recurrence rate after lumbar spine disc surgeries is estimated to be 5-15%. Lumbar spine flexion of more than 10 degrees is mentioned as the most harmful load to the operated disc level that could lead to recurrence during the first six postoperative weeks. This study used wearable sensors technology to quantify flexions during daily living following such surgeries for six weeks postoperatively. The results showed that patients had a 30% normal lumbar motion after the first postoperative week, which increased to almost 75% at the end of the sixth week.

Is the Side Bridge Test Valid and Reliable for Assessing Trunk Lateral Flexor Endurance in Recreational Female Athletes?

Casto Juan-Recio et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the side bridge test in healthy females. The study found that shoulder muscle activation and fatigue, as well as individual anthropometric characteristics, played an important role in the performance of the side bridge test. Despite showing good relative reliability, the test had low absolute reliability and its validity was questionable.

Lumbar segment-dependent soft tissue artifacts of skin markers during in vivo weight-bearing forward-Backward bending

Xin Xi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the soft tissue artifacts (STAs) of the human lower back in three-dimensional directions and determine their effects on the calculation of lumbar joint kinematics. The results showed that STAs had different patterns and magnitudes in the anterior/posterior and proximal/distal directions, and varied during flexion and extension. The STA at the spinous process was lower than that at other locations.

A novel adaptive Kalman filter for Euler-angle-based MEMS IMU/magnetometer attitude estimation

Qifan Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel Euler-angle-based adaptive attitude filter for micro-electro-mechanical system inertial measurement unit (IMU)/magnetometer fusion, utilizing an intelligent coordinate switch algorithm to overcome singularity issues in attitude calculation. It introduces a new noise estimation theorem for adapting the measurement covariance matrix, and evaluates attitude performance with gyroscopic accuracy for optimal filter weight assignment. Simulated and practical experiments confirm the promising orientation solution provided by this adaptive attitude filter.

Assessment of Lumbar Extensor Muscles in the Context of Trunk Function, a Pilot Study in Healthy Individuals

Daniela Vlazna et al.

Summary: The study aimed to comprehensively assess trunk muscle function in healthy volunteers, confirming the repeatability and reliability of measurements in different postural positions. Results showed that male participants generated the greatest lower back extensor strength in the sitting position, while effort time in the Biering-Sorensen test was longer in women and older subgroups.

Similar Biomechanical Behavior in Gait Analysis between Ceramic-on-Ceramic and Ceramic-on-XLPE Total Hip Arthroplasties

Athanasios Triantafyllou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the wear of CoC and CoXLPE implants during gait, finding that both implants behave similarly in clinical settings. Gait kinematics and kinetics are essential for implant wear, with in vitro studies showing less wear in CoC than CoXLPE.

Performance, reliability and fatigue in prone bridge test and supine unilateral bridge test

Fabio Ikezaki et al.

Summary: The PBT and SUBT are reliable tests for evaluating core muscles, with resistance exercise practitioners demonstrating longer holding time during PBT. There were no significant differences in muscle fatigue between the two groups, but PBT led to greater gluteus maximus muscle fatigue, while SUBT resulted in greater fatigue in the rectus abdominis and gluteus medius for both groups.
