Glass ionomer polyalkenoate cements and related materials: past, present and future

Robert Hill

Summary: This article reviews the development of glass ionomer cements (GICs) over the past 40 years and critically examines their clinical advantages and disadvantages. It explores the future development of GICs and related ion-releasing materials, focusing on improved mechanical properties, prevention of secondary caries, and promotion of remineralisation of hard carious dentine. The article also introduces new materials, such as degradable fluorine-containing glass fillers, that have the potential to raise pH and promote remineralisation with the formation of fluorapatite.

Molecular Biological Comparison of Dental Pulp- and Apical Papilla-Derived Stem Cells

Martyna Smeda et al.

Summary: Both dental pulp and apical papilla are potential sources of stem cells for regenerative endodontic treatments. This study compared the molecular characteristics of dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) and stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP). The results showed that both cell types expressed similar mesenchymal stem cell markers and had the ability to differentiate into various lineages. However, differences were observed in the profiles of secreted molecules and gene regulation. Overall, both DPSC and SCAP are suitable for dental pulp tissue engineering from a molecular biological perspective.

The Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity of Bioactive Dental Materials

Marta Kunert et al.

Summary: The biocompatibility of commercially available bioactive materials for dental pulp capping was evaluated in this study. MTA, Biodentine, ACTIVA BioACTIVE, and Predicta Bioactive showed good biocompatibility and may be suitable for pulp capping treatments, while TheraCal LC should be avoided due to its high cytotoxicity.

Resolving nanoscopic structuring and interfacial THz dynamics in setting cements

Fu V. Song et al.

Summary: The setting dynamics of two commercial cements were studied using non-destructive THz spectroscopy and neutron scattering. Changes in interfacial particle dynamics and structural evolutions during setting were found to be correlated. The THz vibrations, especially at dynamically coordinated interfacial Al-atom pivots, played a crucial role in the setting process. These findings provide insights for developing nano-scopic strategies to optimize cement properties.

Kinetics of ion release from a conventional glass-ionomer cement

John W. Nicholson et al.

Summary: The release kinetics of sodium, silicon, aluminium, calcium, and phosphorus from conventional glass-ionomer dental cement were studied in neutral and acid conditions. The results showed that in acid conditions, all elements were released in greater amounts compared to neutral conditions. Frequent changes of water led to greater release of the elements. The release process occurs in two steps: a rapid initial release followed by a longer secondary release, influenced by diffusion in neutral conditions and erosion in acid conditions.

Effects of bioactive glass incorporation into glass ionomer cement on demineralized dentin

Hyun-Jung Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of incorporating sodium-free bioactive glass into glass ionomer cement (GIC) on demineralized dentin. The results showed that BAG could form FAP crystals in GIC without affecting bond strength, suggesting the potential of BAG as a beneficial additive in GIC.

Cytotoxicity and changes in gene expression under aluminium potassium sulfate on Spodoptera frugiperda 9 cells

Rong Feng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that high concentrations of aluminum can lead to cell enlargement, cell membrane breakage, decreased cell vitality, and apoptosis. It also identified that aluminum ions may inhibit the expression of certain proteins related to cell pathways and induce oxidative damage, ultimately affecting cell growth and apoptosis.

Synthesis, characterization, and incorporation of upconverting nanoparticles into a dental adhesive

Rafael Rocha Pacheco et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized, characterized, and functionalized b-NaYF4:30%Yb/0.5%Tm upconverting nanocrystals, and comprehensively investigated them using various techniques. The results showed that the synthesized and functionalized nanoparticles emitted photons in the blue spectral region (450 nm and 474 nm).
