Large-scale high-resolution yearly modeling of forest growing stock volume and above-ground carbon pool

Elia Vangi et al.

Summary: This study presents a new spatial model for estimating yearly growing stock volume, above-ground biomass, and carbon stock. The model was tested in Italy and showed promising results in comparison with existing data and monitoring indicators. The study demonstrates that this modeling approach can be used to establish a forest monitoring system that meets the interests of governments and private entities.

Impacts of wood extraction on soil: assessing rutting and soil compaction caused by skidding and forwarding by means of traditional and innovative methods

Elena Marra et al.

Summary: The study found that the direction (uphill or downhill) during forestry operations has minimal impact on soil damage severity, but downhill skidding is more beneficial in reducing soil compaction compared to uphill skidding. The research also showed that vehicles can distribute pressure horizontally on the ground affecting the soil between wheel tracks, resulting in increased soil bulk density and soil displacement.

Cultural values and forest dynamics: The Italian forests in the last 150 years

Mauro Agnoletti et al.

Summary: In the context of the increasing global interest in the role of forests in global warming and biodiversity targets, there is a growing tendency to consider the need to increase forest area and naturalness. Italy has seen a continuous increase in forest quantity, but faces challenges in preserving forest naturalness and cultural characteristics.

The New EU Forest Strategy for 2030: A New Understanding of Sustainable Forest Management?

Markus Lier et al.

Summary: This study compares the differences between the pan-European set of indicators for sustainable forest management and the New EU Forest Strategy for 2030 through content analysis. The results show that while most objectives and commitments can be monitored using the existing indicator set, new indicators are needed to meet the Strategy's requirements. Additionally, there are some differences between the comprehensive vision of sustainable forest management in the indicator set and the scope of the objectives and commitments in the Strategy.

Recent innovations in the LaRiMiT risk mitigation tool: implementing a novel methodology for expert scoring and extending the database to include nature-based solutions

Vittoria Capobianco et al.

Summary: This paper presents recent innovations in the LaRiMiT webtool, including the use of expert scoring in the decision support tool and the inclusion of nature-based solutions in the tool's database. The LaRiMiT tool helps in selecting appropriate mitigation measures for landslides by considering user-input attributes and expert scoring. The expert scoring methodology is dynamic and allows continuous improvement as more experts contribute.

OSM Science-The Academic Study of the OpenStreetMap Project, Data, Contributors, Community, and Applications

A. Yair Grinberger et al.

Summary: This paper is an editorial introducing the Special Issue titled "OpenStreetMap as a multidisciplinary nexus: perspectives, practices, and procedures". The Special Issue focuses on the applications of OpenStreetMap (OSM) in other disciplines, OSM data quality, and dynamics in OSM. The paper suggests the formalization of an "OSM science" to advance the scientific study of OSM in a unified approach.

Governing Europe's forests for multiple ecosystem services: Opportunities, challenges, and policy options

Georg Winkel et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the state and prospects of forest ecosystem services provision in Europe, identifying six challenges and three opportunities. Four policy pathways are introduced to better align forest ecosystem services provision and demand. The momentum of the EU Green Deal is emphasized for incentivizing the provision of multiple forest ecosystem services.

Effects of land abandonment on nature contributions to people and good quality of life components in the Mediterranean region: A review

Cristina Quintas-Soriano et al.

Summary: Land abandonment is a widespread phenomenon with both positive and negative effects on social and ecological dimensions. Research has mainly focused on the Northern Mediterranean region, particularly Spain, Italy, and France. Most studies have examined the impact on nature's contributions to people, while few have considered the social dimension. The results highlight the diversity of effects and outcomes resulting from land abandonment.

Wall-to-Wall Mapping of Forest Biomass and Wood Volume Increment in Italy

Francesca Giannetti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a spatial approach to obtain high-resolution maps of Italian forest above-ground biomass and current annual volume increment. The results showed that the developed method was in good agreement with official estimates, and this is crucial for supporting the new Green Deal in Italy, the European Forest Strategy 2030, and the Italian Forest Strategy.

Spatial Patterns and Intensity of Land Abandonment Drive Wildfire Hazard and Likelihood in Mediterranean Agropastoral Areas

Michele Salis et al.

Summary: In Mediterranean agropastoral areas, land abandonment increases the risk of wildfires. Using fire-spread modeling, this study assessed the variations in wildfire potential induced by different spatial patterns and percentages of land abandonment. The findings showed that land abandonment significantly increased the probability of wildfires, flame length, and fire size.

Timber Tracking in a Mountain Forest Supply Chain: A Case Study to Analyze Functionality, Bottlenecks, Risks, and Costs

Gerhard Pichler et al.

Summary: The digital transformation of the timber supply chain is crucial, with the integration of RFID technology and intelligent machines in the smart timber tracking and processing system showing promise in enhancing efficiency and safety throughout the supply chain. Despite some technical issues with the intelligent prototype processor, the study demonstrates that the system is effective in transferring information and maintaining costs at a normal level.

Feasibility of enhancing carbon sequestration and stock capacity in temperate and boreal European forests via changes to management regimes

D. Dalmonech et al.

Summary: This study uses a bio-geochemically based forest growth model to assess the effects of various forest management scenarios on net primary productivity and potential carbon sequestration. The findings suggest that moderate forest management practices can enhance both productivity capacity and carbon storage potential in forests.

Are we ready for a National Forest Information System? State of the art of forest maps and airborne laser scanning data availability in Italy

Giovanni D'Amico et al.

Summary: This study aimed to review the availability of forest maps and ALS data in Italy, and to develop a high resolution forest mask and Canopy Height Model. The resulting forest mask is currently the best available for Italy, but only 63% of the country's territory (60% of the forest area) is covered by ALS data, highlighting the urgent need for a national strategy to complete the availability of forest data in Italy.
