Road to unity? Nordic economic convergence in the long run

Lars Bruno et al.

Summary: This study examines the economic convergence in Nordic countries from the 16th to the 20th century. The findings suggest a catch-up process between the Nordic economies and the economic leaders, as well as among the Nordic states themselves. However, by the end of the 18th century, convergence had already occurred. Therefore, while the Nordic states today share striking similarities, they did not develop a single Nordic Model.

Urban-rural population changes and spatial inequalities in Sweden

Martin Henning et al.

Summary: This paper documents the regional population changes in Sweden since 1860 and examines their connection to regional economic development. The study combines long-term population data from historical counties and detailed observations for municipalities. The findings show that as industrialization accelerated, regions across the country experienced growth in production but also divergence in population patterns. After a slowdown in regional GDP convergence during the 1980s, Sweden has witnessed "double divergence" in both population and regional GDP per capita since the 1990s.

Does industry convergence between agriculture and related sectors alleviate rural poverty: evidence from China

Geyao Yang et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the impact of industry convergence between agriculture and related sectors on rural poverty using China's provincial panel data. The findings show that convergence of agriculture and tourism, agriculture and processing industry, and planting and breeding industry have positive and significant effects on poverty reduction. Local employment in rural areas plays an important role in the impact of convergence on poverty reduction.

Environmental innovations in the EU: A club convergence analysis of the eco-innovation index and driving factors of the clusters

Valeria Costantini et al.

Summary: Eco-innovation, a combination of innovation and sustainable development, is crucial for economic growth and environmental preservation. This study examines the convergence of eco-innovation across EU countries from 2012 to 2021 using the club convergence approach. The results reveal three convergence clubs in the overall eco-innovation index, while the number of clusters is higher - four or five - in the five dimensions of the indicator. The analysis highlights the significance of GDP per capita and economic openness as determinants of convergence in the aggregated index, while R&D investments, environmental taxation, and firm size are found to be nonsignificant.

Convergence and the Matthew Effect in the European Union Based on the DESI Index

Tuende Zita Kovacs et al.

Summary: The European Commission monitors the digital progress of Member States through the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). The study finds that there is a "rich get richer" phenomenon among the 27 EU Member States, and the COVID-19 pandemic may have an impact on the DESI index. Using statistical-mathematical methods, the analysis shows a reduction in differences between Member States and a significant catching up rate from 2016 to 2021. Although the existence of a Matthew effect is suggested, it is not significantly confirmed. Further research is needed to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the DESI index.

Divergence between the Economies of the (Former) Yugoslav Republics: Is It Possible to Change Direction?

Maja Bacovic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural components that determine conditional convergence and the reciprocal relationship between these components and income in the (former) Yugoslav countries. The findings suggest that capital stock growth and R&D expenditures are positively correlated with GDP per capita growth in the long run, while R&D has a negative relationship with employment growth. R&D has a long-term impact on GDP per capita growth, but not in the short term. Additionally, the study highlights the significant and positive influence of R&D and tertiary education outcomes on output growth. Convergence is found to be a bidirectional process.

Exploring the driving mechanism and the evolution of the low-carbon economy transition: Lessons from OECD developed countries

Bolin Yu et al.

Summary: This paper reveals the influence mechanism and convergence evolution of carbon emission intensity (CEI) across 29 OECD countries from 1992 to 2018 using an integrated decomposition and econometric framework. The results show that the reduction in CEI is primarily attributed to changes in economic development and energy intensity, while energy consumption per capita has a negligible impact. Econometric analysis indicates that energy intensity, energy mix, carbon emissions per capita, and energy use per capita have positive impacts on CEI, with GDP per capita showing an inverted U-shaped curve relationship. There is evidence of convergence in CEI across developed countries, driven by energy intensity. Among all countries, 15 European countries have made strong low-carbon transition efforts, with Denmark leading the way and South Korea making the least efforts. This study provides important implications for the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Energy reform and energy consumption convergence in Mexico: A spatial approach

Francisco A. Castellanos-Sosa et al.

Summary: This paper examines the convergence of energy consumption per capita (ECPC) among the 32 Mexican states from 2002 to 2017. The study finds a positive, increasing, and statistically significant spatial correlation of ECPC across states, regardless of the recent Global Financial Crisis and Mexican Energy Reform. Using cross-section and spatial dynamic econometric models, the study provides evidence of absolute and conditional beta-convergence in ECPC during different periods. The convergence rates are higher and more stable in spatial dynamic models, around 20%, compared to 3% without spatial effects. The study also finds an inverted U-shape relationship between ECPC and GDP per capita.

Summary: The formation and development of religious diversity is a reflection of the free expression of human thought, belief, and practice, as well as a historical premise and ideological condition for the gradual recognition and integration of modern religions into modern political values. This study examines the spatial characteristics and evolution trend of the global religious diversity index (RDI) through a geographical perspective. The results show the temporal and spatial changes in RDI, influenced by factors such as colonial missionary effect, precipitation, GDP per capita, and genetic diversity.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on EU Convergence

Josef Abrham et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a global impact on the economy, leading to economic decline and regional differences in most EU countries. This study evaluates the economic performance of EU member states from 2010 to 2020 by comparing economic indicators such as GDP per capita and unemployment rate. The findings confirm a reversal of convergence trends due to the pandemic and attribute divergence within the EU to lower decline in GDP among developed countries.

Is the division of Western and Eastern Poland still valid? The evolution of regional convergence in Poland

Tomasz Misiak

Summary: The primary aim of this paper is to empirically verify the hypothesis of the convergence of real GDP per capita in the regions of Poland, as well as the catch-up effect of Eastern towards Western Poland. The results show that while convergence was confirmed in the group of Eastern Poland regions, it was rejected in all regions of Poland and the group of Western Poland regions. Additionally, the strict catch-up effect of Eastern towards Western Poland regions was not observed. Thirteen out of the seventeen regions in Poland exhibited convergence, but the identification of convergence clubs did not depend on a sharp East-West Poland dividing line.

The Convergence of Energy Use from Renewable Sources in the European Countries: Spatio-Temporal Approach

Summary: This article analyzes the convergence of energy use from renewable sources among selected European countries using a spatio-temporal approach. The study shows that the high energy dependence of European countries on the economies of other continents makes the development of renewable sources for energy production an important factor for economic and social progress. The findings suggest that, in order to prevent excessive environmental degradation, the use of renewable energy sources is increasingly becoming a crucial goal for governments worldwide.
