Characteristics of heavy metals in soil of lead-zinc mining areas and changes of antioxidant enzyme systems in maize leaf under Pb stress

Ranran Jiang et al.

Summary: The content of heavy metals Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn in soil was investigated in mining areas, abandoned land, flats of the Pijiang River, and farmlands. The study also examined the changes in the antioxidant enzyme system of maize (Qiandan 88) under different Pb concentrations. The results showed that the highest content of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn was found in mining areas and abandoned land, followed by flats of the Pijiang River and farmlands. Maize leaves showed an increase in T-SOD activity with increasing Pb concentration up to 500 mg/L, but a decrease in T-SOD activity at Pb concentration above 1000 mg/L. POD activity decreased with increasing Pb concentration, and MDA content in leaves increased with increasing Pb concentration up to a certain point and then decreased. This suggests that high Pb concentration leads to membrane lipid peroxidation and cell damage in maize leaves.

Distinction between Cr and other heavy-metal-resistant bacteria involved in C/N cycling in contaminated soils of copper producing sites

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: Through studying typical copper-producing provinces in China, it was found that 90% of sampling sites were heavily polluted with multiple heavy metals, while soil heterogeneity and mutual interference of multimetals are obstacles in exploring bacterial resistance pathways in contaminated field soils. By analyzing contamination indices and bioindicators, along with multivariate statistical models, it was discovered that different types of heavy metals affect antioxidant enzyme activity, urease-induced precipitation of heavy metals, and excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the soil.

Characteristics of leaching of heavy metals from low-sulfur coal gangue under different conditions

Chang Li et al.

Summary: Higher heavy metal content in low-sulfur coal gangue is associated with greater leaching of heavy metals; acidic conditions promote the release of heavy metals in low-sulfur coal gangue; and more precipitation is associated with better release of heavy metals from the low-sulfur coal gangue.
