An overview of the role of nanoparticles in sustainable agriculture

Anindita Hazarika et al.

Summary: The use of different chemical fertilizers and pesticides has negative effects on biodiversity, soil fertility, and ecosystems. In recent years, nanotechnology has gained interest in agriculture due to the advantages of nanoparticles, such as their small size, easy handling, long shelf life, and high efficiency. Nanotechnology supports sustainable agriculture by producing nano pesticides and managing plant diseases. However, more research is needed on the mechanisms of nanoparticles and potential risks they may pose.

Chitosan and chitosan-derived nanoparticles modulate enhanced immune response in tomato against bacterial wilt disease

Konappa Narasimhamurthy et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the priming efficacy of chitosan and chitosan-derived nanoparticles (CNPs) against bacterial wilt of tomato. The results showed that CNPs treatment significantly protected tomato seedlings against pathogen-induced wilt disease, leading to better growth. The induced resistance was related to increased deposition of lignin, callose, H2O2, and superoxide radicals. Additionally, CNPs treatment upregulated the expression of defense-related genes and antioxidant enzymes in tomato plants, improving their defense response against bacterial wilt disease.

Overexpression of a tomato AP2/ERF transcription factor SlERF.B1 increases sensitivity to salt and drought stresses

Yuqin Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized an ERF gene, SlERF.B1, which belongs to the IX subfamily of ERFs. The expression of SlERF.B1 was induced by various abiotic stresses such as salt, mannitol, cold, heat, and ACC, while repressed by ABA, IAA, and 1-MCP treatments. SlERF.B1-overexpression in tomato and Arabidopsis led to increased sensitivity to salt treatment and decreased tolerance to mannitol and drought stress. It was found that SlERF.B1 could repress the expression of SlARF5 and SlER24 by binding to the dehydration-responsive element (DRE) in the promoters.

A vital role of chitosan nanoparticles in improvisation the drought stress tolerance in Catharanthus roseus (L.) through biochemical and gene expression modulation

E. F. Ali et al.

Summary: This study is the first to demonstrate the use of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) in alleviating drought stress of Catharanthus roseus by enhancing antioxidant potential and gene expression related to alkaloid biosynthesis. CSNPs increased proline accumulation and the activity of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), reducing drought-induced oxidative stress and preserving membrane integrity. Additionally, CSNPs led to increased alkaloid accumulation and upregulated gene expression associated with alkaloid biosynthesis under drought stress.
