Comparative assessment of zero emission electric and hydrogen buses in Australia

David A. Hensher et al.

Summary: The pace of direct and indirect electrification for public transit bus fleets is accelerating internationally. Battery-driven electric buses and fuel-cell electric buses are the two prominent choices. This study provides an assessment of these technologies on emission reduction, costs, and other aspects. By comparing different electrification scenarios of bus fleets using Australian data, evidence is provided on the reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and costs in converting a diesel bus fleet to a fully green fleet.

Comparative analysis of cost, emissions and fuel consumption of diesel, natural gas, electric and hydrogen urban buses

Pedro Munoz et al.

Summary: Within the energy transition, this paper compares different bus technologies and energy mixes for urban transport vehicles based on cost, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The results show that battery and hydrogen fuel cell buses have reduced emissions, while compressed natural gas buses are currently the better option. However, battery electric buses are projected to become the best option by 2023, followed by hydrogen fuel cell buses from 2027 onwards. The transition to zero-emission technologies in Argentina's urban bus fleet would significantly reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and energy consumption.

Charging operations in battery electric bus systems considering fleet size variability along the service

Miquelt Estrada et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the operational challenges caused by the energy range limitation in battery electric bus systems and develops a model to estimate the resources needed and the total cost. The results indicate that opportunity charging is more cost-efficient than charging at bus garage when certain standards are met.

Electric-bus routes in hilly urban areas: Overview and challenges

Gregor Papa et al.

Summary: The electrification of public transport in cities is expanding, and there is a great potential for fully electric buses (EBs) due to their high energy efficiency. This article provides an overview of the current state of electric-bus-related technologies and investigates the impact of route topography and climate on battery demands. There is a lack of challenging benchmark routes in Europe to test new technologies for seamless driving in difficult conditions. Although many cities have set up trial EB routes for testing under various driving conditions, there is still a need for benchmark routes in challenging environments to evaluate urban-transport electrification.

Balancing the GHG emissions and operational costs for a mixed fleet of electric buses and diesel buses

Shuai Shao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the balance of deploying a mixed fleet of diesel buses and electric buses in order to reduce GHG emissions and operational costs. The study finds that in a real-world bus system in Liuzhou City, China, electric buses are preferred for bus lines in the downtown area during peak hours, while diesel buses are allocated to bus lines in the suburbs during off-peak hours. The analysis shows that replacing all diesel buses with electric buses can lead to a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 77.04%.
