Utility of Teleorthodontics in Orthodontic Emergencies during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review

Summary: The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the types of orthodontic emergencies managed by teleorthodontics during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that voice calls and smartphone applications like WhatsApp Messenger were commonly used by patients to communicate with their orthodontists. The main orthodontic emergencies involved fixed multibracket appliances and the common issues were discomfort, pain, fracture or loss of the appliance, protruding distal ends of archwires, brackets, tubes and bands or retainer detachment. The teleorthodontics approach involved using relief wax, cutting protruding archwire ends, and replacing or removing detached appliances.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urgent dental care delivery in a Swiss university center for dental medicine
