Barriers to and Facilitators of User Engagement With Digital Mental Health Interventions: Systematic Review

Judith Borghouts et al.

Summary: Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) deliver mental health support via technologies such as mobile apps, offering increased access to mental health support and demonstrating effectiveness in improving symptoms. User engagement with DMHIs varies, with barriers such as severe mental health issues, technical issues, and lack of personalization, and facilitators including social connectedness, increased health insight, and feeling of control over one's own health. These factors can guide the evaluation and design of DMHIs to enhance user engagement and support mental health.

Increased alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic: The effect of mental health and age in a cross-sectional sample of social media users in the US

Ariadna Capasso et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased alcohol use, especially among individuals with anxiety and depression. This study found that age may influence the association between anxiety, depression symptoms, and alcohol use during the pandemic. Younger individuals (18-39 years old) had the highest probability of reporting increased alcohol use, while older individuals with anxiety and depression symptoms were more likely to increase their drinking compared to those without symptoms. These findings suggest the need for targeted public health messaging and expanded substance use services for middle-aged and older adults with mental health symptoms.

Addressing Health Literacy in Patient Decision Aids: An Update from the International Patient Decision Aid Standards

Danielle M. Muscat et al.

Summary: The study found that only 12% of Patient Decision Aids (PtDAs) addressed the needs of people with low health literacy or other socially-disadvantaged groups, indicating some level of inequality. While most PtDAs were understandable, they lacked actionability. A post hoc subgroup analysis revealed that using strategies to reduce cognitive demand in PtDA development led to greater knowledge improvements.

Shared decision-making among people with problematic alcohol/other drug use and co-occurring mental health conditions: A systematic review

Alana Fisher et al.

Summary: The systematic literature review found that Shared Decision-Making (SDM) is a well-accepted and preferred approach in managing co-occurring AOD and mental health conditions. SDM-based interventions are viewed as feasible, acceptable, and useful, with evidence supporting improvements in the decision-making process and to a lesser extent, patient-related outcomes. Further research is needed to build on this evidence base.
