Full-scale computational fluid dynamics study on wind condition of the long-span Queensferry Crossing Bridge

Licheng Zhu et al.

Summary: For the first time, a full-scale bridge aerodynamic CFD study was conducted on the Queensferry Crossing in the UK. The aim was to accurately simulate the wind field around the bridge. The CFD predictions were validated with field data and demonstrated good potential for practical bridge aerodynamic studies.

Experimental study on high-mode vortex-induced vibration of stay cable and its aerodynamic countermeasures

Zhiwen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the high-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of stay cables in cable-stayed bridges and effective suppression measures through experimental research. The results show that stay-cable VIV can be effectively suppressed by increasing the damping ratio under low damping conditions. Helical fillets are found to have limited effectiveness in suppressing high-mode VIV responses.

Wind-Induced Phenomena in Long-Span Cable-Supported Bridges: A Comparative Review of Wind Tunnel Tests and Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling

Yuxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Engineers, architects, planners, and designers need to carefully consider the effects of wind on long-span bridges, with traditional wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics simulations being common methods for analysis. This paper focuses on research regarding wind issues on long-span cable-supported bridges, including flutter, vortex-induced vibrations, and rain-wind-induced vibrations. The paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the use of wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics modelling for analyzing wind effects on long-span bridges.

Coupling High-Resolution Numerical Weather Prediction and Computational Fluid Dynamics: Auckland Harbour Case Study

Amir Ali Safaei Pirooz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the resilience of large cities and their built infrastructure in New Zealand to extreme winds by coupling a high-resolution NWP model with CFD simulations. The CFD simulations and NWP forecasts showed good agreement in estimating wind speeds and gusts over the bridge, emphasizing the importance of understanding local wind speed effects.
