Summary: Rankings are pervasive in the modern world as valuation devices that exert pressure on the ranked when they enter the public sphere. However, research often overlooks the important role played by organizations producing rankings, which put great effort into addressing and responding to different kinds of criticism to maintain credibility. This requires constant attention and the use of multiple procedures and rhetorical strategies by producers of rankings.
