cotH Genes Are Necessary for Normal Spore Formation and Virulence in Mucor lusitanicus

Csilla Szebenyi et al.

Summary: Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection caused by certain members of the fungal order of Mucorales. The frequency of systemic mucormycosis has been increasing, mainly because of increasing numbers of susceptible patients. Moreover, Mucorales display intrinsic resistance to the majority of routinely used antifungal agents, which limits the number of possible therapeutic options.

Increasing Incidence of mucormycosis in Spanish inpatients from 1997 to 2018

Raul Parra Farinas et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the incidence and associated factors of mucormycosis in Spanish public hospitals from 1997 to 2018. The results showed that mucormycosis is a rare infectious disease in Spain, but its incidence has significantly increased in the past two decades. Being an adult male and having diabetes, neoplasm or renal failure are the main factors associated with the disease.

Case Report: Immune Checkpoint Blockade Plus Interferon-Γ Add-On Antifungal Therapy in the Treatment of Refractory Covid-Associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis and Cerebral Mucormycosis

Alexandra Serris et al.

Summary: Invasive fungal diseases (IFD) continue to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, necessitating the development of new treatment approaches. Recent data suggest that checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) may have a beneficial effect. This report presents a case of a diabetic patient with refractory IFD following SARSCoV-2 infection, who was treated with ICI and interferon-gamma in combination with antifungal therapy.

Mucormycosis in Children With Hematologic Malignancies: A Case Series and Review of the Literature

Yvette G. T. Loeffen et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed cases of mucormycosis in Dutch pediatric hemato-oncology patients and reviewed the literature to gain insight into contemporary outcomes. The results showed that with screening, early diagnostics, and early antifungal and surgical treatment, mortality can be low and even disseminated disease can be salvageable. Further research is needed to improve the survival of mucormycosis in children.

Summary: This study developed a new protocol for fungal identification from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, using DNA extraction from 63 FFPE tissues with histopathologically confirmed invasive fungal infections (IFIs). The results showed that DNA yield was significantly higher with conventional PCI method compared to commercial kit, and PCR targeting ITS1 region had the best test accuracy among the different rDNA regions tested.
