Lean-as-imagined differs from lean-as-done: the influence of complexity

Summary: This study investigates the impact of complexity on the gap between the Lean-as-Imagined (LAI) in design and Lean-as-Done (LAD) in practice, and presents a research framework. The findings from a nine-month study in a large plant of a transnational auto-parts manufacturer in Brazil reveal the significant role of resilience arising from the self-organization of employees in lean production implementation. The contribution of the framework to leanness assessment is discussed, and four research propositions for future studies are presented.

The interaction between supply networks and internal networks: performance implications

Summary: This study is the first to concurrently investigate the supply and internal networks of multinational corporations, revealing that the performance effect of a firm's physical proximity to its supply network is negatively moderated by the geographic dispersion of the firm's internal network. Additionally, the benefits of dual embeddedness for individual subsidiaries come at a cost to the firm-level due to operational challenges.
