Strengthening supply chain resilience during COVID-19: A case study of JD.com

Zuojun Max Shen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak has severely affected global supply chains, including the retailing supply chains in China. However, JD.com has effectively responded to the exceptional demand and logistical disruptions through its comprehensive intelligent platforms and integrated supply chain structure. The joint efforts of multiple firms, the government, and the entire Chinese society have also played a crucial role in controlling the market situation in China.

Direct and mediation effect of supply chain complexity drivers on supply chain performance: an empirical evidence of organizational complexity theory

Pushpendu Chand et al.

Summary: In today's globalized business environment, growing supply chain complexity is a major threat to the firm's business continuity, competitive advantage, and business performance. However, the impact of specific supply chain complexity drivers on supply chain performance remains largely unanswered. This study aims to explore the causal impact of supply chain complexity drivers on supply chain performance, decomposing supply chain complexity into four sub-categories and using structural equation modeling to test the hypothesis.

Lean-as-imagined differs from lean-as-done: the influence of complexity

Marlon Soliman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of complexity on the gap between the Lean-as-Imagined (LAI) in design and Lean-as-Done (LAD) in practice, and presents a research framework. The findings from a nine-month study in a large plant of a transnational auto-parts manufacturer in Brazil reveal the significant role of resilience arising from the self-organization of employees in lean production implementation. The contribution of the framework to leanness assessment is discussed, and four research propositions for future studies are presented.

The interaction between supply networks and internal networks: performance implications

Fabienne Chedid et al.

Summary: This study is the first to concurrently investigate the supply and internal networks of multinational corporations, revealing that the performance effect of a firm's physical proximity to its supply network is negatively moderated by the geographic dispersion of the firm's internal network. Additionally, the benefits of dual embeddedness for individual subsidiaries come at a cost to the firm-level due to operational challenges.

The lenses of lean: Visioning the science and practice of efficiency

Wallace J. Hopp et al.

Summary: There is a significant gap between industry practitioners' descriptions of Lean and academic research, as well as between applied research on Lean and basic research in other sciences. Lean practice is largely based on trial-and-error experience while valuable research results remain unused. This paper aims to bridge these gaps by introducing four Lenses of Lean, hoping to provide a useful framework for Lean training and implementation, as well as encouraging relevant academic research to advance Lean practice.

Microdosing flexibility in an efficient supply chain

Lance W. Saunders et al.

Summary: The article explores the balance between efficient and responsive supply chains, finding that the high supply-demand cost mismatch in the company is mainly due to supply chain design issues. The simulation model shows that failure to take advantage of responsiveness opportunities and the failure of decision makers to accurately distinguish time limits are key reasons for the mismatch costs.

On the validity and practical relevance of a measure for structural complexity

Mozart B. C. Menezes et al.

Summary: The study shows that product variety, multimarket strategies, and multichannel strategies can boost a company's sales, but deploying them in slow-growing markets may lead to a complexity crisis that erodes profits. The pars-Complexity measure captures the relationship between structural complexity and performance, with business units with lower values outperforming those with higher figures in terms of pre-tax margin.

Towards crisis protection(ism)? COVID-19 and selective de-globalization

Layla Branicki et al.

Summary: This paper critically examines how the Australian Government's measures against COVID-19 have influenced globalizing and de-globalizing discourses, leading to divergent conceptualizations of national resilience. It introduces the concept of crisis protectionism to explain the mobilization of discourses aimed at accelerating selective de-globalization in Australia. The study highlights the importance of non-market risks and non-economic logic to international business and MNE strategy in the context of COVID-19.
