Magnetic Properties of Zig-Zag-Edged Hexagonal Nanohelicenes: A Quantum Chemical Study

Vitaly Porsev et al.

Summary: The atomic structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of two zig-zag-edged hexagonal nanohelicenes of the second type [1.2] and [2.2] were investigated using density functional theory. These nanohelicenes exhibit a helical periodicity and belong to the fifth family of line symmetry groups in their global energy minimum. We found that these nanohelicenes are diamagnetic metals that undergo a spontaneous symmetry breaking into antiferromagnetic semiconductors through the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition. However, under torsional stress, a reversible transformation to a diamagnetic metal can occur, which holds promise for the utilization of nanohelicenes in electromagneto-mechanical nanodevices.

Single-wall pristine and Janus nanotubes based on post-transition metal chalcogenides. First-principles study

Andrei V. V. Bandura et al.

Summary: First-principles simulations were used to investigate the structure and properties of nanotubes constructed from binary MX and mixed M2XY, MLX2, or MLXY monolayers. The stability of nanotubes was analyzed in comparison to bulk phases and monolayers. Janus nanotubes based on post-transition metal chalcogenides were simulated for the first time. The electronic properties of Janus nanotubes suggest their promise for photocatalytic applications, and the elastic properties indicate that gallium chalcogenide nanotubes have lower rigidity than transition metal chalcogenide nanotubes.

Molecular dynamics study on mechanical properties of helical graphenes/epoxy nanocomposites

Chunhua Zhu et al.

Summary: Helical graphenes have excellent electrical and mechanical properties, making them ideal nanofillers for the preparation of epoxy resin matrix composites. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that these composites exhibit higher Young's modulus and yield strength compared to pure epoxy resin systems, especially at low crosslinking degrees. The enhancement of mechanical properties is attributed to the entanglement between molecular chains and helical graphenes.

Density functional theory method for twisted geometries with application to torsional deformations in group-IV nanotubes

Hsuan Ming Yu et al.

Summary: This study presents a real-space formulation and implementation of Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory for twisted geometries, and applies it to the study of torsional deformations of nanotubes. The authors discuss different aspects of the computational method, including the governing equations, numerical implementation, convergence, accuracy, and efficiency properties. The technique is shown to be well suited for simulating quasi-one-dimensional structures and their deformations, and can provide valuable insights into the mechanical behavior and electronic properties of nanomaterials.

The sensitive energy band structure and the spiral current in helical

Zhe Zhou et al.

Summary: The electronic properties of helical graphenes with different edge types and sizes were theoretically investigated. The results showed that these graphenes displayed significant but regular physical characteristics, such as energy band structures, quantum conductances, and current distributions. This study extends our knowledge of graphene-family nanomaterials and lays the foundation for the realization of nano-scale helical circuits in carbon-based integrated circuits.

Graphyne nano-spirals under tension: Effects of base structures on superelasticity and fracture mechanisms

Ali Narjabadifam et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of nano-spirals made of different graphyne structures under tension using molecular dynamics simulation, comparing the results with graphene nano-spirals. Five distinct deformation stages are observed, with the effects of various base structures on superelastic deformation capabilities and fracture mechanisms analyzed. It is found that the stretchability of nano-spirals increases with outer radius up to a maximum threshold, then decreases, with graphene and gamma-graphyne spirals showing clearer decrease compared to alpha- and beta-graphyne spirals.

Ab initio modeling of helical polyacetylenes: Peierls and Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transitions

Vitaly Porsev et al.

Summary: Helical polyacetylenes (CH)n are perspective materials for innovative technologies. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to study two helical isomers of polyacetylene and their spontaneous symmetry breaking. The study showed that both Peierls-type and Mott-Hubbard transitions need to be considered, and the preference for one transition over another can depend on subtle factors.

DFT modeling of electronic and mechanical properties of polytwistane using line symmetry group theory

Anton V. Domnin et al.

Summary: In this study, the electronic and mechanical properties of polytwistane were investigated considering helical symmetry for the first time. Density functional theory (DFT) and the CRYSTAL17 code were used for the calculations. It was found that the formation energy curve of polytwistane has only one minimum corresponding to an incommensurate structure. Changing the symmetry cell from CH to C6H6 had an effect only under extreme torsion. The results showed that the electronic band gap and mechanical properties of polytwistane changed smoothly within relatively small ranges of torsion and axial deformation.
