Christian Garavaglia et al.

Summary: Legitimation is a local phenomenon that stimulates the emergence of new firms, but it is offset by competition as the number of firms increases. The effects of legitimation and competition are more dominant within the municipality than in a larger area. The magnitude of these effects is weaker than what is predicted by conventional regressions, and legitimation has a stronger and quicker impact compared to competition.
