Composition and diversity analysis of the lung microbiome in patients with suspected ventilator-associated pneumonia

Dominic Fenn et al.

Summary: Using 16s rRNA sequencing, we analyzed the airway microbiota of patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). We found that patients with positive cultures had dysbiosis and increased relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria. Increased IL-1 beta expression was associated with reduced microbial diversity and presence of pathogenic bacteria. Diagnostic accuracy improved when using pathogen-specific relative abundance thresholds.

Anaerobic Microbiota Derived from the Upper Airways Impact Staphylococcus aureus Physiology

Sarah K. Lucas et al.

Summary: The microbiota of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis is characterized by a higher prevalence and abundance of anaerobes, which can degrade mucins and alter the physiology of Staphylococcus aureus. This study shows that a core mucin-degrading community in chronic rhinosinusitis patients contributes to the growth of S. aureus by providing a nutrient pool from mucins. The presence of mucin-derived metabolites profoundly affects the transcription of S. aureus and highlights the interplay between S. aureus metabolism and virulence in the upper airways.
