Magnesium modified activated carbons derived from coconut shells for the removal of fluoride from water

Athanasia K. Tolkou et al.

Summary: The presence of fluoride in water is a major global water problem that requires effective technologies for its removal. This study focuses on the development of novel adsorbents for fluoride removal, such as magnesium or/and lanthanum-modified activated carbon and silica. The adsorbent materials were studied in terms of their structure and morphology, and tested for the treatment of fluoride-containing waters. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 8, after 4 hours of reaction, and with a dose of 0.2 g/L of adsorbent. Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetic model fitted the experimental data well.

Adsorption of Reactive Black 5 azo dye from aqueous solution by using amine-functioned Fe3O4 nanoparticles with L-arginine: Process optimisation using RSM

Seyedeh Mahtab Pormazar et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficiency of Fe3O4 nanoparticles functionalized with L-arginine (Fe3O4@L-arginine) for removing RB5 azo dye from aqueous solution was investigated. The experiments were designed and the adsorption parameters were optimized using the Box-Behnken design. The results showed successful synthesis of Fe3O4@L-arginine nanoparticles. The optimal conditions for dye adsorption were found to be a dye concentration of 50 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 0.8 g/L, and pH 3, with an efficiency of 97.6%. The adsorption of RB5 dye followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Temkin isotherm model, indicating a spontaneous endothermic process. The Fe3O4@L-arginine nanoparticles can be used multiple times with maintained high efficiency for RB5 dye adsorption. Thus, these nanoparticles are suitable adsorbents for removing dye from colored wastewater due to their high performance, easy synthesis and use, and ease of separation.

Chromium(VI) Removal from Water by Lanthanum Hybrid Modified Activated Carbon Produced from Coconut Shells

Athanasia K. Tolkou et al.

Summary: This study examined the performance of activated carbon produced from coconut shells, modified by lanthanum chloride, for Cr(VI) removal from waters. The results showed that the modified activated carbon achieved a maximum Cr(VI) removal of 95% at pH 5 and initial Cr(VI) concentration of 30 μg/L. The adsorption capacity decreased by 20% after 5 regeneration cycles. These findings highlight the potential of the modified activated carbon for effective Cr(VI) removal in water treatment.

Adsorption of Congo red from aqueous solution onto KOH-activated biochar produced via pyrolysis of pine cone and modeling of the process using artificial neural network

Nihan Kaya et al.

Summary: In this study, KOH-activated pine cone biochar was prepared and characterized for the removal of anionic diazo dye, Congo red, from wastewater. The optimized conditions resulted in a high dye removal efficiency of 94.62% at an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L. Various adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium and kinetics of the adsorption process, with the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo second-order kinetic model showing the best fit. The use of artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm successfully predicted the adsorption capacity of the biochar, with ANN10 model providing the most accurate results.
