Enhancing the performance of natural rubber latex with polymeric isocyanate as cold-pressing and formaldehyde free adhesive for plywood

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: A cold-pressing and formaldehyde free adhesive for plywood was prepared by incorporating natural rubber latex (NRL) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with polymeric 4,4-diphenyl methane diisocyanate (pMDI). The addition of pMDI improved the curing performance and adhesive strength of the adhesive, while reducing formaldehyde emission.

Ambient curable natural rubber latex adhesive cross-linked with polymeric isocyanate for bonding wood

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: This study investigated a formaldehyde-free ambient curable adhesive based on natural rubber latex, using poly(vinyl alcohol) and polymeric 4,4-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate as additives. The results indicate that the adhesive with 15% pMDI showed the highest shear strength, making it suitable for manufacturing laminated wood.

Influence of Lignin Content and Pressing Time on Plywood Properties Bonded with Cold-Setting Adhesive Based on Poly (Vinyl Alcohol), Lignin, and Hexamine

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the addition of 10% and 15% lignin content in the adhesive resulted in better cohesion strength compared to that with 20% lignin content. However, statistical analysis revealed that using 20% lignin in the adhesive and a cold-pressing time of 24 h could produce plywood comparable to control polyurethane resins. This eco-friendly plywood bonded with PVOH-lignin-hexamine-based adhesive using cold pressing showed promising potential as an alternative to conventional plywood production.
