Urban informality and the state: Repairing Cairo's waters through Gehood Zateya

Noura M. Wahby

Summary: This paper argues that in modern Cairo, the state's hegemonic control over water governance is being challenged by increasingly blurred formal and informal everyday practices. The author demonstrates how water governance in Cairo operates through a plurality of informal practices that transcend boundaries of class, legality and space. By drawing on theories of hybrid infrastructures and urban informality, the paper explores the relational processes of water access and repair shaped by socio-technical practices of state and non-state actors in Cairo.

Patchwork: Repair labor and the logic of infrastructure adaptation in Mexico City

Alejandro De Coss-Corzo

Summary: This article introduces the concept of patchwork to understand repair practices in Mexico City's networked hydraulic infrastructure. By separating repair practices from maintenance logic, it provides a more detailed understanding of the role of repair labor in infrastructure and emphasizes the importance of adaptive repair based on improvisational and incremental work for the endurance of urban infrastructure.
