Thermospheric Density Perturbations Produced by Traveling Atmospheric Disturbances During August 2005 Storm

K. H. Pham et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global distribution of thermospheric density perturbations during geomagnetic storms by combining satellite observations and simulation models. The results show that these perturbations occur not only in high latitude regions, but also in the equatorial region. The simulation results demonstrate that traveling atmospheric disturbances generated at high latitudes result in larger density peaks in the equatorial region. This study highlights the importance of studying thermospheric density variations globally.

Unusual Quasi 10-Day Planetary Wave Activity and the Ionospheric Response During the 2019 Southern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warming

J. C. Wang et al.

Summary: An unusual Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event occurred in the Southern Hemisphere in September 2019, accompanied by the amplification of Q10DW wave activity and driving of ionospheric oscillations. The study suggests that Q10DW wave activity during SSWs has significant impacts on the ionosphere.

Salient Midlatitude Ionosphere-Thermosphere Disturbances Associated With SAPS During a Minor but Geo-Effective Storm at Deep Solar Minimum

Ercha Aa et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the subauroral ion-neutral coupling processes and midlatitude ionospheric/thermospheric responses during a minor but geo-effective storm in North America in September 27-28, 2019 under deep solar minimum conditions. Despite the low solar activity, the storm produced several dynamic features such as intense subauroral polarization stream, enhanced winds, and large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances. The midlatitude ionosphere and thermosphere exhibited positive storm effects followed by negative effects, indicating substantial dynamics in low solar flux conditions.

Understanding the Total Electron Content Variability Over Europe During 2009 and 2019 SSWs

T. A. Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The study investigates the variability of Total Electron Content (TEC) over Europe during Northern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events in 2009 and 2019 using a combination of observational data and model simulations. The simulations show that geomagnetic forcing played a major role in TEC variability during the 2019 SSW event, while changes in semidiurnal solar and lunar tides accounted for the majority of TEC variability during the 2009 SSW event. Comparing simulations with and without these tides demonstrated a significant increase in TEC attributed to these semidiurnal tides.
