Machine Learning Methods Applied to the Global Modeling of Event-Driven Pitch Angle Diffusion Coefficients During High Speed Streams

G. Kluth et al.

Summary: In this study, a global machine-learning model of event-driven pitch-angle diffusion coefficients for storm conditions is built based on data from NASA Van Allen Probes. Nonparametric machine learning methods are used to derive the diffusion coefficient models, and three methods are selected for their accuracy and efficiency. The study also analyzes the behavior of mean diffusion coefficients compared to individual ones and discusses how to conduct uncertainty quantification for Fokker-Planck simulations of storm conditions for space weather forecasting.

Origin of Dawnside Subauroral Polarization Streams During Major Geomagnetic Storms

Dong Lin et al.

Summary: Solar eruptions cause geomagnetic storms that lead to visible aurorae and invisible dynamic changes in the earth's near-Earth environment. Just equatorward of the aurora, intense westward plasma flows called subauroral polarization streams (SAPS) occur in the dusk-to-midnight ionosphere. These flows generate frictional heating, plasma waves, and density irregularities that interfere with radio communications. Recently, intense eastward subauroral plasma flows in the morning sector called dawnside SAPS were discovered during a super storm. The origin of dawnside SAPS has remained a mystery, but this study shows that they can only occur during major storm conditions. Understanding the origin of dawnside SAPS is important for comprehending the response of the geospace system to strongly disturbed solar wind conditions, which can have severe impacts on human society and infrastructure.

Summary: The study used the Naval Research Laboratory's ionosphere model to investigate thermal outflows during a storm. The improved two-fluid model for H+ avoided issues seen in previous simulations, while also identifying counterstreaming cold ion populations. Results showed that nonphysical refilling density peaks were milder in the fully three-dimensional simulations compared to previous models.

Investigation of Small-Scale Electron Density Irregularities Observed by the Arase and Van Allen Probes Satellites Inside and Outside the Plasmasphere

Neethal Thomas et al.

Summary: In this study, electron density profiles obtained from Arase and RBSP-B satellites were used to investigate small-scale density irregularities in the plasmasphere and near the plasmapause. The results showed that density irregularities are present globally at all MLT sectors and L-shells, with a higher occurrence at L > 4 and during disturbed geomagnetic and interplanetary conditions. Case studies revealed coexistence of plasmaspheric density irregularities with the hot plasma sheet population, and modulation of plasma waves by small-scale density irregularities during quiet periods. Different source mechanisms are suggested to be responsible for the generation of density structures at different MLTs and geomagnetic conditions.

Summary: The study revised the plasmatrough equations using electron density data from the Van Allen Probes mission, with attention to spatiotemporal variation and geomagnetic activity influence. Comparisons with other parametrizations and data from the Arase mission showed a slight underestimation of plasmatrough electron density for high L values and high geomagnetic activity in the new observations. Despite large variability, the overall performance of the new parametrization follows a satisfactory general trend in the plasmatrough.

Scattering by whistler-mode waves during a quiet period perturbed by substorm activity

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of radiation belt electrons using observations from the Van Allen Probes and numerical simulations, focusing on the effects of quiet periods, substorm activity, and high-speed streams on the radiation belts, particularly on pitch-angle diffusion of outer belt electrons. The research found that these events can lead to significant changes in plasma density, whistler-mode waves, and pitch-angle diffusion within the plasmasphere, affecting the distribution and scattering of electrons in the outer belt.

Summary: The plasmapause serves as the boundary of the plasmasphere and undergoes sudden changes in plasma density, affecting different regions of the magnetosphere due to various circulating waves. By comparing measurement data and models, it is found that the position of the plasmapause is directly linked to the radiation belt boundaries. During geomagnetic storms, the plasmapause moves equatorward in relation to the equatorward edge motion of the auroral oval.

The Role of Mesoscale Plasma Sheet Dynamics in Ring Current Formation

K. A. Sorathia et al.

Summary: During geomagnetically active periods, ions are transported from the magnetotail into the inner magnetosphere and accelerated to energies of tens to hundreds of keV, with H+ and O+ as the dominant species. This study investigates the relative importance of mesoscale flow structures and ion non-adiabaticity on the produced ring current using global MHD simulations and injected test particles. The results show that mesoscale bubbles, depleted entropy regions, and particle gradient drifts play critical roles in ion transport, while O+ non-adiabaticity affects energization and spatial distribution, and H+ non-adiabaticity has implications for loss timescales.
