Factors influencing researchers' journal selection decisions

Attitudes, willingness, and resources to cover article publishing charges: The influence of age, position, income level country, discipline and open access habits

Summary: This study presents the results of a randomly selected sampled survey (N = 3,422) that explores scholars' attitudes towards the pay-to-publish or Gold OA model. The findings indicate that APCs are perceived as a global threat to Science rather than a deterrent to personal professional careers. Scholars from low and lower-middle income level countries hold the most unfavorable opinions about the APC system. Non-experimental disciplines have more negative perceptions of APC compared to STEM and the Life Sciences. Age, access to external funding, and commitment to OA self-archiving negatively predict refusal to pay to publish.

An analysis of revising article processing charges for open access journals between 2018 and 2020

Summary: This study examined the changes in APCs for 231 open access journals independently launched by two large publishers, BMC and Hindawi. While most BMC journals raised their charges, about half of Hindawi journals had lower charges in 2020 compared to 2018. The study found that BMC increased APCs for journals with higher citation scores, while Hindawi did not consider citation scores in revising charges.
