Redrawing symbolic boundaries after Maidan: identity strategies among Russian-speaking Ukrainians

Summary: Amidst the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and increasing polarization, the symbolic boundaries between the two spaces are changing. An investigation into the themes and strategies of border-construction between 'Ukrainianness' and 'Russianness' was conducted through examining the everyday communication of Russian-speaking Ukrainians. The results revealed that the polarization and hardening of borders prompted two main responses: acceptance and negotiation/denial, driven by the competition between ethnic and civic elements in the national identity discourse.
