Vagabond Microbes, Leaky Laboratories and Epidemic Mapping: Alexandre Yersin and the 1898 Plague Epidemic in Nha Trang

Christos Lynteris

Summary: This article explores the epidemic mapping created by Pasteurian doctor Alexandre Yersin during the outbreak of bubonic plague in Nha Trang, arguing that these maps were not just visual objects intended to establish and systematize epidemiological knowledge, but were driven by Yersin's desire to distance plague from his accused laboratory. Thus, epidemic mapping in this case serves a distancing function.
