Pollution havens and agglomeration: The effect of globalization and technological spillover

Summary: The statistical significance of the pollution haven hypothesis remains low, indicating that there might be overlooked factors in hypothesis testing. The degree of technological spillover, which affects the concentration of polluting firms, may determine the existence of pollution havens due to trade liberalization. Our study reveals that the type of spillover in innovation (local or global) determines whether pollution havens emerge or not, and narrowing the technology gap between North and South could eliminate pollution havens in a global economy.

Can the joint regional air pollution control policy achieve a win-win outcome for the environment and economy? Evidence from China

Air pollution and tax avoidance: New evidence from China
