Pollution havens and agglomeration: The effect of globalization and technological spillover

Yoshihiro Hamaguchi

Summary: The statistical significance of the pollution haven hypothesis remains low, indicating that there might be overlooked factors in hypothesis testing. The degree of technological spillover, which affects the concentration of polluting firms, may determine the existence of pollution havens due to trade liberalization. Our study reveals that the type of spillover in innovation (local or global) determines whether pollution havens emerge or not, and narrowing the technology gap between North and South could eliminate pollution havens in a global economy.

Can the joint regional air pollution control policy achieve a win-win outcome for the environment and economy? Evidence from China

Di Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explores the environmental and economic effects of China's Joint Prevention and Control System of Regional Air Pollution (JPCSRAP) using the PSM-DID method and Chinese urban data. The findings show that JPCSRAP can achieve a win-win outcome by reducing air pollution while promoting economic growth, with the effects increasing over time. However, the effects vary across regions. The effectiveness of JPCSRAP is attributed to enhanced collaborative governance between cities, industrial structure upgrading, and technological innovation.

How does anti-corruption affect green innovation? Evidence from China

Jiamei Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the anti-corruption campaign on listed companies' green innovation in China. The findings indicate that firms in regions with anti-corruption inspections have more green innovation, with the positive relationship partially mediated by firms' rent-seeking behavior. Moreover, the influence is particularly significant in sub-samples with high levels of political connection.

Air pollution and tax avoidance: New evidence from China

Yuxin Shen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of air pollution on corporate tax avoidance using data from listed firms in mainland China. The findings indicate that higher levels of air pollution are associated with increased tax avoidance by pollution-emitting firms. Further analyses reveal that this association is more pronounced for firms in high-polluting and monopolistic industries, state-owned enterprises, and regions with weaker government influence over taxation and the economy. The study employs robust checks, including regression models, to confirm the causal effect of air pollution on corporate tax avoidance. The results suggest that air pollution shapes tax avoidance behavior through its impact on employee mood and operational efficiency. The research contributes to understanding how the natural environment influences corporate tax strategies and highlights the importance of government enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. The study has policy implications for both developing and developed countries, emphasizing the need for stronger environmental regulation and financial governance.

Is dirty trade concentrating in more polluting countries? Evidence from Africa

Marta Suarez-Varela et al.

Summary: This study examines the trade-environment link in African trade patterns and finds that dirty trade is increasingly concentrated in African countries, particularly those with less stringent environmental regulations. Furthermore, exports from dirty industries tend to concentrate in countries with higher levels of capital endowments. These findings have important implications for trade and environmental policies as well as sustainable development in Africa.

Corruption pays off: How environmental regulations promote corporate innovation in a developing country

Tong Fu et al.

Summary: This study found that the stringency of environmental regulations in China only promotes corporate innovation when interacted with regions with high corruption, with bribery expenditures playing a mediating role. The research further confirms that corruption is the key mechanism in the Porter effect in developing countries.

Greasing Dirty Machines: Evidence of Pollution-Driven Bribery in China

Summary: The study reveals that polluting firms in emerging markets respond to institutional pressures by combining relational activities and clean technology investments. However, some of them also alleviate regulative pressures by bribing government officials, which is an unethical strategy for managing political relationships.
