Adherence and persistence to once-daily single-inhaler versus multiple-inhaler triple therapy among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the USA: A real-world study

David Mannino et al.

Summary: This study found that single-inhaler fluticasone furoate/umeclidinium/vilanterol (FF/UMEC/VI) demonstrated improved adherence and persistence compared to multiple-inhaler triple therapy (MITT) in patients with COPD.

Summary: Less than 50% of patients were defined as persistent. Patients' awareness of their disease and levels of HRQL were associated with high rate of persistence and adherence.

Real-World Treatment Patterns of Multiple-Inhaler Triple Therapy Among Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in UK General Practice

Leah B. Sansbury et al.

Summary: This retrospective observational study in the UK found that the average duration of use of multiple-inhaler triple therapy (MITT) for COPD patients was 5.1 months with 24% of patients persisting for 12 months. Patients with poorer lung function and more acute exacerbations of COPD were more likely to persist for 12 months. Most patients switched to different inhaler combinations after discontinuing MITT. Further research is needed to understand reasons for discontinuation and consequences of therapy discontinuation.

Summary: By applying three different PDC algorithms to real-world data from online pharmacies, the study found that these algorithms can assess pharmacy services and individual levels of adherence in real-world databases, especially in settings where people may switch between different suppliers of medicines.

Identifying COPD in routinely collected electronic health records: a systematic scoping review4

Shanya Sivakumaran et al.

Summary: The use of electronic health records for examining outcomes related to COPD is common, but consensus on identifying cases from electronic healthcare databases is lacking. A systematic review found wide variation and inconsistency in the definitions used to identify COPD cases in recent literature.

Summary: In this study, ICS withdrawal in primary care COPD patients was not associated with an increased risk of exacerbation in most patients, but those with frequent courses of oral corticosteroids and high blood eosinophil counts should continue ICS therapy.
