The role of clinical pharmacists in general practice in England: Impact, perspectives, barriers and facilitators

Mann Claire et al.

Summary: This article examines the experience of implementing a clinical pharmacist in general practice and found that they have a positive impact on health outcomes related to polypharmacy and long-term conditions. General practitioners have a positive response to clinical pharmacists but need to invest time in building relationships. Patients appreciate the role of clinical pharmacists in providing expertise and increasing access to healthcare practitioners. Barriers to successful implementation include policy and funding issues, lack of role clarity, and lack of quantitative and economic validation. Supportive working relationships, integration, and mentoring are facilitators of success.
