A note on out-of-sample prediction, marginal effects computations, and temporal testing with random parameters crash-injury severity models

Qinzhong Hou et al.

Summary: Random parameters logit models have become popular for investigating crash-injury severities, with the model incorporating heterogeneity in means and variances showing superior predictive performance. Different methods for computing marginal effects and testing temporal instability were considered, with pairwise comparison proving to provide more detailed insights into temporal variability.

Forecasting annual electric power consumption using a random parameters model with heterogeneity in means and variances

Mohammad M. Hamed et al.

Summary: This paper develops heterogeneity-based econometric models to forecast yearly electricity consumption. It departs from classical regression models and explicitly accounts for unobserved heterogeneity. Three modeling approaches are applied: random parameter linear regression model, correlated random parameter linear model, and random parameter linear model with heterogeneity in means and variances. Results show that the random parameter methodology is statistically superior to the classical regression model, and the model with heterogeneity in means and variances has the lowest forecasting error among all models. Important predictors of electricity consumption include average electricity price, contribution of renewable energy, number of households, average electric power price, and availability of all-season air conditioners with hot and cold inverter characteristics.

Summary: The study found that deer-vehicle collisions are more likely to occur in rural areas, during dark lighting conditions, and during deer breeding season. Female drivers are more likely to hit deer, while the use of restraints can prevent injuries or fatalities.

Trips for outdoor exercise at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland

Torran Semple et al.

Summary: The study focuses on outdoor exercise trips of Scottish residents at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that factors such as socioeconomic and demographic variables influenced the frequency of outdoor exercise trips. Furthermore, the study suggests that certain groups, such as those with health problems or disabilities, may be at higher risk of experiencing negative health consequences due to limited physical activity.

Addressing unobserved heterogeneity in the analysis of bicycle crash injuries in Scotland: A correlated random parameters ordered probit approach with heterogeneity in means

Grigorios Fountas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the determinants of injury severities in single-bicycle and bicycle-motor vehicle crashes using correlated random parameter ordered probit models. The findings show that the determinants of injury severities vary between the two types of crashes, with some common factors having different effects. The proposed methodological framework demonstrates relative benefits in terms of statistical fit, explanatory power, and forecasting accuracy compared to less sophisticated models.

Temporal stability of factors influencing driver-injury severities in single-vehicle crashes: A correlated random parameters with heterogeneity in means and variances approach

Chamroeun Se et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal instability of contributing factors of driver-injury severities in single-vehicle crashes and finds substantial instability in factors such as driver gender, speeding, and crash locations across different time periods. The findings highlight the importance of considering temporal instability in influencing the outcomes of driver-injury severities. Neglecting temporal instability in crash severity studies may lead to biased and inaccurate conclusions.
