In their own words: A narrative analysis of illness memoirs written by men with prostate cancer

Jill van der Kamp et al.

Summary: This article examines the complexities of living with prostate cancer over time through a narrative analysis of illness memoirs. The findings show that men reconstruct their identities in response to the disruptive nature of cancer, describing a fluid relationship with the disease. Uncertainty is created by the 'not knowing' of prostate cancer, shaped by medical technologies and disagreeing doctors. The study argues for a different perspective on the impact of prostate cancer and highlights the importance of illness memoirs in advancing sociological understanding of cancer as a lived experience.

This is what the truth is: Provider-patient interactions serving as barriers to contraception

Virginia Kuulei Berndt et al.

Summary: This study interviews 86 women and 51 providers in the United States to explore the interactional barriers in women's contraceptive decision-making, revealing that differences in embodied and biomedical knowledge lead to providers' preferences overriding women's choices. Additionally, providers view their relationships with patients as empowering equal partnerships, which hinders women from achieving their desired contraceptive method.
