Spectrum of neurological complications following COVID-19 vaccination

Ravindra Kumar Garg et al.

Summary: COVID-19 vaccines have brought hope against the pandemic, with some minor and transient neurological complications reported post-vaccination. The most devastating complication is cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, while Bell's palsy is another major concern. Additional unexpected adverse events include acute transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, and acute demyelinating polyneuropathy, as well as reactivation of herpes zoster. Studies are needed to explore the causal association between vaccines and these neurological events.

Ischemic Stroke and Vaccine-Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia following COVID-19 Vaccine: A Case Report with Systematic Review of the Literature

Angelo Cascio Rizzo et al.

Summary: This study describes a case of ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (LVO) after Ad26.COV2.S vaccination, and systematically reviews published cases of ischemic stroke and vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) following COVID-19 vaccination. The results show that in addition to cerebral venous thrombosis, adenoviral vector-based vaccines also appear to have a risk of cerebral arterial thrombosis, and clinicians should be aware that ischemic stroke with LVO, although rare, could represent a clinical presentation of VITT.

Acute Meningoencephalitis after COVID-19 Vaccination in an Adult Patient with Rheumatoid Vasculitis

Joe Senda et al.

Summary: This article reports a case of meningoencephalitis in a patient with rheumatoid vasculitis after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The diagnosis was based on MRI findings and etiological assessments, and the patient achieved symptom relief and improved MRI results with steroid and gammaglobulin therapy. Neurologic complications may occur in patients with rheumatoid diseases or vasculitis syndromes following COVID-19 vaccination.

Summary: This article describes the first case of untreated post COVID-19 vaccine encephalitis with spontaneous resolution of contrast enhancing hyperintensities on MRI concomitant with clinical improvement. Although neurological reactions can occur after COVID-19 vaccination, the benefits of receiving the vaccine outweigh the risks.

COVID-19 Vaccination and Neurological Manifestations: A Review of Case Reports and Case Series

Shitiz Sriwastava et al.

Summary: A systematic review found that there have been neurological manifestations following COVID-19 vaccination, including CVST, GBS, and TM. Early identification and treatment are important for better outcomes. Further studies with non-vaccinated controls are needed to understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of these neurological manifestations.

A Rare Adverse Effect of the COVID-19 Vaccine on Autoimmune Encephalitis

Ying-Fong Huang et al.

Summary: Since the start of COVID-19 vaccination worldwide, there have been reports of various vaccine-related adverse effects. This brief report highlights a rare adverse effect, short-term memory loss with autoimmune encephalitis (AE), and aims to draw the attention of the medical community and serve as a reference for future vaccine improvement. Despite the risks of adverse outcomes, vaccination is still recommended due to the high risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 and the overall favorable safety/tolerability profile of existing vaccines.

Persistent Health Issues, Adverse Events, and Effectiveness of Vaccines during the Second Wave of COVID-19: A Cohort Study from a Tertiary Hospital in North India

Upinder Kaur et al.

Summary: This study examined the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in India and the health issues associated with vaccination. The results showed that the vaccines can reduce the severity of COVID-19 but offer only marginal protection against occurrence. Additionally, individuals receiving the vaccine after recovery from COVID-19 have a higher risk of persistent health issues.

Acute Demyelinating Encephalomyelitis Post-COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Report and Literature Review

Khalid Al-Quliti et al.

Summary: New advancements in global medical information during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the development of vaccines and an effort to vaccinate people to boost herd immunity. However, there have been rare cases of acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) associated with both COVID-19 infection and vaccination. This article presents a case of a 56-year-old female who developed ADEM symptoms after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Summary: Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare but life-threatening complication that mimics heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). This study reports a case of a patient receiving hemodialysis with heparin and developing thrombotic thrombocytopenia after vaccination. Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has prompted the development of various types of vaccines, with nucleic acid vaccines being a next-generation platform. Despite concerns about adverse effects, current evidence suggests a minor risk of neurological disorders from these vaccines. Long-term effects still require further observation.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

Alberto Vogrig et al.

Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection can lead to various nervous system complications, and a mass vaccination program is important for reducing long-term sequelae. However, it is crucial to report potential adverse events as more patients receive COVID-19 vaccines. Here, we present a case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) in a patient with a history of post-infectious rhombencephalitis who developed the condition two weeks after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Hyperacute reversible encephalopathy related to cytokine storm following COVID-19 vaccine

Luca Baldelli et al.

Summary: The first case of hyperacute reversible encephalopathy following COVID-19 vaccination is described, with the patient presenting with acute onset encephalopathy characterized by agitation and confusion. High dosage steroid therapy led to rapid response and complete remission within 3 days from onset, indicating a potential association between the clinical manifestation and systemic/CSF cytokine hyperproduction responsive to steroid therapy. The occurrence of encephalopathy after vaccination may be attributed to an excessive innate immune response against the vaccine, particularly in predisposed patients susceptible to autoimmunity.
