Summary: Poor food and fluid intake are common problems in long-term care, and institutional factors are partially responsible. Evidence-based guidelines can provide best practices, but feasibility and environmental factors must be considered in implementation. Why Men Fare Worse: A Mixed-Methods Study Examining Gender Differences in Nursing Home Resident Quality of Life

Heather Davila et al.

Summary: Despite documented research on gender differences in later life outcomes, there remains limited knowledge on the differences in quality of life for nursing home residents based on gender. This study used a mixed-methods design, including surveys, interviews and participant observations, to examine the relationship between gender and residents' quality of life. After controlling for individual and facility characteristics, it was found that men reported lower overall quality of life than women, with lower ratings in several domains. Men were less satisfied with activities, had fewer friends, and relied less on family for support compared to women. These findings highlight the importance of considering gender differences in nursing home care and providing tailored activities and support to enhance the quality of life for male residents.
