Triggering Presuppositions

Philippe Schlenker

Summary: The article presents new evidence supporting the view that presuppositions are generated by a "triggering algorithm," which processes contextual information and transforms it into presuppositions. It also discusses how presuppositions only emerge when contextual information guarantees entailment.

Interpreting plural predication: homogeneity and non-maximality

Manuel Kriz et al.

Summary: Plural definite descriptions across languages exhibit two main properties: non-maximal readings with potential exceptions, and different interpretations in affirmative and negative sentences. This study presents a theory where sentences with plural definite expressions trigger a range of interpretations, and language use principles account for their understanding in various contexts. The proposed theory resolves issues from previous works and has a broader empirical scope, offering a precise analysis for complex interactions between plural definites, quantifiers, and bound variables. Comparisons with alternative proposals show differences in architecture and predictions.
