Prospective BMI changes in preschool children are associated with parental characteristics and body weight perceptions: the ToyBox-study

Yannis Manios et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of an intervention on changes in age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles in preschoolers and explore the influence of perinatal factors, parental perceptions, and characteristics on these changes. While the intervention did not significantly affect BMI percentiles, parents' underestimation of their child's weight, parental overweight, and maternal pre-pregnancy obesity were found to be associated with increased BMI percentiles. Helping parents accurately perceive their and their children's weight status is important for promoting positive behavioral changes and adherence to healthy lifestyle habits in the family.

Children's longitudinal bodyweight in Australia: Influence of migrant mothers' long-term residency, attachment to, and level of childhood overweight in country-of-birth

Susan Hartono et al.

Summary: Immigration has both positive and negative effects on the body weight of both mothers and children. Mothers' long-term residency and attachment to their country of birth are factors associated with increased body weight in children. Additionally, the childhood overweight environment in the mother's country of birth continues to influence the body weight of their children even after immigration.
