Measuring epistemologies in science learning and teaching: A systematic review of the literature

Silvia Wen-Yu Lee et al.

Summary: This review study focuses on the measurement of epistemologies of science, providing an overview of recent developments. Major constructs such as epistemic beliefs and views, nature of science, and epistemic metacognition are discussed. Quantitative studies mostly use questionnaires to measure personal epistemologies, while qualitative studies focus on personal epistemologies as well. Studies on practical epistemologies tend to utilize qualitative methods more than quantitative methods. Characteristics and psychometric properties of research instruments are summarized, and suggestions for future directions in research are provided.
